There are plenty of nonmusical plays coming to Broadway this spring, but producers are fretting that few of them are selling.
Three of those plays Sweat, Indecent and Significant Other moved to Broadway because of strong reviews from former New York Times critic Charles Isherwood. But he and the paper have since parted ways, and theres no guarantee that Ben Brantley, or whoever else reviews them for the Times, will be as kind.
First, the numbers.
The only play with a decent advance is The Glass Menagerie, starring Sally Field. Sources say its sold close to $3 million worth of tickets. Thats not bad, but its a far cry from the $10 million advance for Nathan Lane in the falls The Front Page or the $6 million for Cate Blanchett in The Present. (Despite wildly mixed reviews, The Present is on track to recoup its $3.5 million investment.)
A distant second to Glass Menagerie is Kevin Kline in Noël Cowards Present Laughter, ringing up $1.5 million.
After that, its bleak. As of the beginning of this week, according to box-office figures obtained by The Post, none of the other plays had come anywhere near the $1 million mark.

Broadway is simply part of the conveyor belt for Liberalism.
Not to mention that they are very $$$$. The writing has gone way down over the years.
The ‘Hamilton incident’ did not help. I don’t want to spend $800 for some self-centered prick lecture me about politics. People come to plays/movies to forget about life for a few hours, not be blamed for it.
It’s a pretty good crowd for a Saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
‘Cause he knows that it’s me they’ve been comin’ to see
To forget about life for a while
And the piano, it sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say, “Man, what are you doin’ here?”
Notice how many of these plays are remakes? There is so little creativity they’ll be putting on “Our American Cousins” soon.
West Side Story II
Sweat, Indecent and Significant Other are three politically correct and/or anti-Capitalist plays about the misery of traditional life that only a liberal New Yorker would want to see. I’d actually be surprised if they made money.
Every now and then they trot out the Glass Menagerie. Reason: Tennessee Williams/gay.
Yeah there have been a lot of revivals recently. Glass Menagerie has been done twice in the last 3 years.
And this is the second Broadway production of Glass Menagerie in 3 years. It’s ridiculous.
Many years ago, an old girlfriend and I saw Bob & Ray in a Broadway show...
The only play on Broadway I saw was Neil Simon’s worst.
Hamilton is probably the last successful play. It is ridiculously expensive to make these plays and people are sick of spending a hundred dollars for a decent seat. Oh well. Change the way productions are done. Make them cheaper. Get rid of “stars” and go with normal people like Hamilton did.
Two excellent plays we saw were The Lion King and Wicked. Both really good.
Which was his worst?
"THAT'S OUR HITLER!"
It's also a really gawdawful, pointless, depressing story.
I saw Rumors.
And, from last century. I agree, there is little creativity in Hollywood or Broadway.
A little off topic; but, when the last Star Wars film came out, hubby and I along with our daughter and her husband, went to see it. I thought it was okay; but, then my son-in-law started complaining that all it was, was a remake of the very first Star Wars film. I thought about it, and he was right. It was the story of Luke Skywalker, except they decided to make Luke a girl in this film.
No creativity anywhere really -- not plays, not tv shows and not films. And don't get me started on the fact that no comedies are actually funny anymore.
