I am considering building a AR-15 Carbine 223/556. I have looked at the Ruger AR556 for about $600. Being an Engineer and mechanically skilled I'm giving some thought to "building my own". What do you think?

The AR15 platform is like legos for adults...I say build one. They are as simple as can be.

Allow NRA and others file the suits in state courts.
If you splurge on ANYTHING, then splurge on the optic.
Makes it SOOOOO much more effective.
1. expensive rifle + iron sights = so/so
2. cheap rifle + expensive optic = DEVASTATING.

If you did get one before the deadline, you must register it with the state.
The state DOJ is drooling so hard they can’t make up their mind how this is to happen.
So far it may include photos of both sides of your ‘assualt weapon’, money, fingerprints, and more.
You have one year. After that you are illegal. If you change the configuration (different uppers) sounds like trouble.
If you started with an 80%, that is a “Ghost Gun” and must have a serial number. In fact any gun without a SN must get one. Even most old ones must get a SN, i.e., those made before SNs were used.
And no mags over 10 rounds, no grandfather.
And register to buy ammo, face-to-face only. No on-line, no bringing into the state.
And more, via ‘regulations’ as the DOJ tries to implement the new laws.
Oh Yeah. Lead ban statewide for all hunting.
What part of "I am considering building a AR-15 Carbine 223/556" sounds like a 220 to 250 grain bullet?
Just a suggestion for a better caliber.
I’ve been hunting for several years with the 6.5X47 Lapua.
So it was a natural for me to select the 6.5 Grendel for an AR to hunt with. I was using a 130gr Berger VLD in the Lapua and I can shoot the same weight bullet in the Grendel.
And at the ranges that I shoot, I’ll have more than adequate power with the Grendel.

For a complete gun, I like Daniel Defense.
But they are a bit more than $600...but worth it.

In 1999 I built an AR, using no special tools, on the floor of the room I rented, having zero previous experience with firearms at all, guided by an exploded diagram I found on the interweb.
It has not exploded yet, but there’s always that first time.
Rural King has a .300 Blackout for $450 new in box.
If you are gonna buy a budget AR, buy the S&W M&P Sport II. The Ruger has very tight takedown pins and the AR is supposed to be designed to be able to take it down with just your hands and a bullet. (Upper and Lower, and bolt carrier group) The Ruger requires a chisel to push the takedown pins and the bolt carrier group is of inferior quality to the one in the M&P.
if you go higher end, I recommend Spikes Tactical, Midwest Industries and Daniel Defense.
if you go REALLY high end..the Barrett line of Carbines are insane.

I was on their web site about two hours ago looking for an Upper and everything they had was out of stock. The only Lower they had in stock were their blems but I didn't want another Lower right now. Their price/quality ratio is very good and everyone is buying them out.
That’s the one I picked up about 6 months ago (the S&W)...$668 and change out the door.
It’s my first AR; still can’t believe how handy and accurate this thing is. My only regret is that it isn’t in 7.62. I was on a budget.
Seriously, I've bought blem uppers and lowers from them and never had a problem. You can put together an upper and lower for under $500.
$1,099 is a lot for an AK in pieces!
