The National Institute of Informatics (NII) in Japan claims that taking and publishing photos of subjects who are flashing the popular two-fingered 'V' or peace sign could lead to identify theft. It warns that fingerprint recognition technology is now so advanced that even casual snapshots can be used to retrieve fingerprint information. The report also says the technology is widely available and easy to use.

Unless the camera is inches away and has time to focus. Then those ridges and whorls and loops could find their way into a database ...
The answer is simple: just turn your hand so that the back is toward the viewer when flashing the peace sign.
Well, I would imagine
‘Flipping one the Bird’
and the bonus
‘And this one is for your horse’
would fall under the same category.
I agree that it is probably not a big concern today but given how fast imaging technology is improving, fingerprints and retinas can probably be accurately imaged from meters in the not too distant future.

Without going into details, the article said the researchers were able to image usable fingerprints from several meters.
Then the camera would get the fingernail.
Never heard of that. I was thinking of the centuries-old British gesture of insult. Oh well, deuces is fine too, as long as it will cause trouble.
“Never heard of that.”
I’ll assume you don’t hang out with inner city Blacks and follow the hip-hop “culture”?
:)
I say, Holmes, this is simply astounding! How on earth could you know that?
I’m actually reading The Return of Sherlock Holmes currently! (Moriarity is dead...)
Yet another reason to buy duct tape.
One feature that impressed us the most was how fast the Galaxy S7's camera can focus compared to the iPhone 6s Plus. It's incredibly fast and it means you can take sharp, focused pictures more quickly with less risk of missing the moment you want to capture.
Agree resolution will make it unlikely to be effective except close up.
A higher risk issue is the meta data in cell phone photos revealing where you live by GPS. There are things you can do to prevent that. I don’t share cell phone data with a number of apps in my phone. If you are not sure about it, you can look at the EXIF data from one of the photos. For most purposes you can see it using tools within GIMP, but there are better more positive was to check if that data is embedded. In linux there is a well know command line app that will view it and if you want to batch process the removal from photo’s you’ve alread made, you can do that. I suspect there is a Windows equivalent, but don’t remember using one.
... Which is the British equivalent of “the finger”.
Moriarty might be dead, but Col. Moran is out to get Holmes, at least at the beginning of the book, as I recall.
I read all of the Sherlock Holmes tales, many years ago. Might be time to reread them.
Just open the pic and look at properties.
You can view the EXIF there .
Yep. The origin of the gesture is interesting.
I’ve enjoyed them immensely so far.
Col. Moran has already been foiled by Holmes. (First story of the book)
