FULL TITLE: Terri Schiavo Archives: A Permanent Place at Ave Maria University for Learning Terri Schiavo's Historic Story

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 18, 2017 /Christian Newswire/ -- Terri Schiavo's 2005 death by starvation and dehydration marked the start of America's slide toward treating euthanasia generally, and assisted suicide specifically, as if they were forms of medicine. Knowing the true story of Terri's fight is important for understanding the roots of America's culture of death.

Since Terri Schiavo's death, her parents and siblings—Mary and Robert Schindler, and siblings Bobby and Suzanne—have envisioned a supportive, permanent home for the public records that tell the story of Terri's battle. Thanks to Ave Maria University's Canizaro Library, the Schindlers have found that home.

"We knew that my Terri's death wouldn't be the last time someone was fatally denied food and water," reflects Mary Schindler, Terri's mother. "She had a brain injury. She wasn't terminal, she wasn't dying. She was conscious. We knew when she was killed that she was just the first victim of many yet to come."

It was this conviction that led the Schindlers to preserve dozens of boxes worth of materials that tell the story of Terri and her family's struggle to protect her, with the belief that future researchers inquiring into the history of American euthanasia would need to understand Terri's story in an unbiased and straightforward way.

The Terri Schiavo Archive will be available for privileged access to students, researchers, and visitors interested in learning more about Terri's fight, available by inquiring with Ave Maria University's Canizaro Library directly. The Terri Schiavo Archives represent the first ever comprehensive collection of the records pertaining to Terri's prolonged legal clash , and the first time these materials are available to the public.

"We were thrilled to donate these materials to Ave Maria University," reflects Tom Shakely, executive director of the Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network. "We know Terri's case remains profoundly important not only in itself, but also in relation to the larger battles for the dignity of the human person."

"We're so pleased to add the Terri Schiavo Archive to our growing collection," shares Jennifer Nodes, Ave Maria's Director of Library Services. "It is a wonderful opportunity to preserve unique primary source materials for research, teaching, and scholarship and will no doubt shape lives and perspectives far into the future."

Ave Maria is located in Southwest Florida, roughly 45 minutes from Naples on the west coast, and approximately 90 minutes east from Miami/Fort Lauderdale. Ave Maria University was founded by Tom Monaghan, founder of Domino's Pizza, as an orthodox Catholic university.

The Terri Schiavo Archive can be accessed online here.

The Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network upholds human dignity through service to the medically vulnerable. This mission is expressed by affirming essential qualities of human dignity, which include the right to food and water, the presumption of the will to live, due process rights for those facing denial of care, protection from euthanasia as a form of medicine, and access to rehabilitative care. The Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network has supported more than 2,000 families and has directly advocated hundreds of cases since its founding. Visit lifeandhope.com.

I find it interesting how the husband controlled the autopsy. Had it not been for that, things might have turned out differently.

I include Terri’s name in my prayers every day, and I always call her by her maiden name, Schindler. It just bothered me that people continued to call her by the name of her murderer.

My daughter is a Gyrene! That’s a great school and a great place and the best place to archive Terri’s case. If you have never been to Ave, I would encourage everyone here to go. There is no place like it in the entire Country, even the people in town are kind, gracious and openly love the Lord.

I would love for my kids to go there. My parents used to live in Naples, it’s a beautiful place, and to have a faithful Catholic university there is awesome.

I live in Baltimore. It was cheaper to send my daughter to Naples, Florida and board at Ave than for her to live at home and go to Loyola College in town. Plus, the faith component blows Loyola away. Every year, the incoming freshman at Ave have higher GPA’s and SAT scores than the previous class. Its getting competitive. The kids really make the place. Of course it doesn’t hurt to see the palm trees, sun and beach excursions in January.

Many people told me how great Jeb Bush was as a Governor. Stuff like “he’s more conservative than his brother; he’s done a fantastic job in Florida; he’ll be a shoo-in for President.” That sort of crap was all the rage. Until Terri Schiavo came up on the radar screen.

Jeb Bush’s gutless and cowardly actions and inactions during Terry Schiavo’s desperate fight for her life opened my eyes wide, indeed, and left me swearing I would rather not vote at all if that scumbag was ever the nominee. If there was ever a moment for a courageous Governor to use his executive police power to overturn a totally unjust judicial travesty and take the matter of judicial lawlessness to the streets, that was it. But the RINO jackass just couldn’t bring himself to do the right thing.

Thank God almighty we have President Trump instead.

Good information for when the time comes, thanks.

There are 2 things that frustrate me as I look to my kids’ future, one being the expense of college. But that wouldn’t bother me so much if I thought it would be worthwhile. I’m a stay at home mom and would happily go back to work full time to give them the best springboard possible towards whatever it is they want to become. However the value of college seems to be getting less and less, and I do NOT wish to be complicit in the amoral brainwashing and stupification of their generation through my financial support. So it makes me happy to see that there are still a few good options.

Not to mention...in the sun and near beaches and shopping and mansions and the Everglades and art galleries and nice people and actually now that I think of it 2nd and 3rd cousins...bonus! :D

One thing I always liked about Naples was that for all the money washing around it wasn’t the least snobby. I could go window shopping in the little couture boutiques (I really like the art that goes into that kind of stuff) and no one ever gave me the stink eye.

Morgana, thank you for posting this. I'm sure a lot of us will want to bookmark this. It's good to have a permanent link to the records. This is an ongoing battle, for the lives of vulnerable people.

My first thought in response to your post was “not as much as Terri lost.” Then I realized, he lost infinitely more.

Yes, Phil. It did. Ironically, he thought he was going to use her as a stepping stone to political success. All he had to do was the right thing, but he failed. He clearly demonstrated that he knew it was right to save her life, and wrong not to. He chose to do the wrong thing, believing he would profit from her murder.

Thanks, Phil. Ave Maria University is a good place to learn about Terri. I think she’s been immortalized in a statue too. I’m not sure if any of her family still live in Fla. They remember her every day and Terri’s Day is March 31st so I try to remember Terri on that day. Jeb was a coward. How could he protect a nation when he couldn’t be a man and stand up to his brother and to his fake attorney Ken what’s his name who CAVED. Had his lawyer not caved, who knows? They all caved and her life expectancy was supposed to be 75, not the age she was when she was murdered.

Hi, BB. Still dealing with the EPA problem. Guess what? The EPA doesn’t care about fresh air or clean water. They are front group - I hope Trump reforms it. Many Americans are poisoned every day and it’s right here, not in Iraq or Syria or India, pick a country. It’s right here.
