Chargers shouldn't look for a welcome wagon in L.A.
LA Times ^ | January 11, 2017 | Bill Plaschke

Eery relationship is built on honesty, so the San Diego Chargers should hear this as their moving vans are chugging up the 5 Freeway on their noble mission of greed.

We. Don’t. Want. You.

The news broke Wednesday that Chargers owner Dean Spanos has informed NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell he is moving the team to Los Angeles, which is pretty much dreadful news for Los Angeles.

With some of the cities teh NHL and NBA have gone to, I think Saskatoon needs to be considered the next time the NHL expands.

Interestingly (another fact I got from Hot Stove this morning), there have been 24 team relocations in the last 40 years. Only one (1) has been in Major League Baseball.

McKay was once asked (in the Buccaneers’ first season) “Coach, what do you think of the execution of the defense?”

He answered, “I’m all for it.”

Yeah, that might be worse.

I’ve seen cities do much better the second time around, but third tries generally don’t work out.

The NBA team KC had has moved three times, stopping on its journey across the country.

They were the Rochester Royals. Then they moved to Cincinnati. From there, they moved to Kansas City, where they became the Kansas City Kings. Then on to Sacramento, where they are now.

Next stop, Hawaii?

Cincinnati might have been a better choice.

Much like baseball in Tampa Bay — especially when the Yankees are there.

The funny thing is that when Baltimore came up for an expansion team, the leading voice against it was Art Modell.

he also blew off the Cleveland officials when they offered to negotiate a deal for a new stadium, then moved to Baltimore because he didn’t get it.

And some Baltimoreans may have been happy, but the taxpayers of Maryland certainly weren’t. We paid for that stadium and because we gave the Ravens a sweetheart lease, the Oriole invoked their parity clause to get the same (vastly reduced) rent at OPACY.

The move had at least as many opponents as supporters. Even among those of us who thought that what the Irsays did to Baltimore was terrible.

But Parris Glendening had to pay off Baltimore for creating enough votes to get him elected (probably fraudulently.) The Ravens and the stadium were the payoff.

Never mind Havana Pete Angelos (Asbestos Man) and his utter disregard for Marylanders in the DC metro area. Many of those fans still viscerally HATE the Orioles. Passionately.

Those “trees” are interesting. Bill James says that with one or two exceptions, every manager in the modern era can be traced back either to Ned Hanlon (one of the premier managers of the nineteenth century) or to Connie Mack.

Take Dusty Baker as an example. Baker coached under Roger Craig. Craig pitched for Casey Stengel. Stengel played for John McGraw. McGraw played for Hanlon.

The Rams just hired a 30-year-old head coach.

The AFL came about because Lamar Hunt and Bud Adams couldn’t get NFL teams, so they started their own league.

Hamilton on its own might be a better choice than Thunder Bay, or perhaps even Saskatchewan.

A friend of mine just came out as a LA Chargers fan. He hates football and football people so he decided to do the thing that will most piss them all off.

Only New York, I think, has more teams.

Correct. Nine in the four major sports (one more than LA, due to three hockey teams), plus two professional soccer teams (one more than LA.)

Angelenos deny it, but they're insanely jealous of that.

The late DC sports host Ken Beatrice used to say, “If Wayne Gretzky can be traded, anyone can be traded.”

That should be fun. A bunch of fans who hate the sport. I guess they’ll have to make money on memorabilia sales.

I’m sure they won’t have any San Diegans coming up the freeway to see them.

Interesting post, but I disagree with you about the Dodgers leaving Brooklyn. That franchise wasn't in great shape by the time it left, with flat attendance figures and a city government in New York that wasn't terribly interested in helping them relocate to a new stadium that the O'Malley family was willing to pay for.

When you think about it, it's almost natural for cities on the west coast to poach teams from other places. The west coast grew quickly in the post-WW2 era after the major sports leagues had already been established in the Northeast and Midwest.
