President Abraham Lincoln signs the Emancipation Proclamation.
Excellent history. Excellent home page. Your artwork is amazing.
Lincoln had the most difficult job of holding the country together. The Emancipation Proclamation had an ethical goal that was blocked by Democrats. That’s why MLK, Jr., was a Republican.
by the end of 1864, 800,000 men served in the Union Army. Only 2 percent of that number were drafted into that army. The remainder were volunteers. It was the overwhelming vote of Union Army soldiers in Nov 1863 that got Abraham Lincoln reelected President of the United States. What ever the cause, the men of the Union Army willingly paid the price for the North’s victory. OBTW, the Confederate Draft started a full year before the U.S. Draft.
Yes, but the states secceded because of slavery. So in the end it was about slavery.
Missouri and Kentucky as well.
(A few days later, recovering from his massive New Year’s party hangover...)
“I freed the WHAT?!?!?!?!”
Missouri ended slavery on January 11, 1865. Maryland ended slavery October 13, 1864. West Virginia ended slavery February 3, 1865. Delaware and Kentucky did not end slavery until the 13th Amendment was ratified.
