Poitín now legal to drink in Ireland as first license given [Poteen, moonshine]

After generations of his family spent their lives as outlaws for making the infamous Irish poitín, Pádraic Ó Griallais has finally been able to carry out the family business in the open just under a decade after the spirit was outlawed.

Taking a career break from his job as a high school teacher to establish a new business based on his old family recipe, Ó Griallais is free to produce and sell the highly alcoholic spirit as he pleases without the interference of the Gardaí [Irish police], who hounded the previous poitín distillers in his family with raids to put a stop to the production of the beverage that was outlawed from 1661 to 1997 due to excise regulations.

The production of the spirit was regulated by the Irish Department of Agriculture in 1997 but only under their specific regulations. Luckily the regulations still allow Ó Griallais to use the botanical bogbean that grows around his family’s homeland around Indreabhán, County Galway, that makes their specific recipe so special. …

I don’t know about the washer eating the washcloths, but what I do know is that three is not enough for two weeks. It’s kind of hard to lose something in a top-loading machine.

The laundry is done, and all that’s left is to put clean sheets on the bed. I’ll have to go back up in about 20 minutes to unlock the doors for the unwashed masses, but at least I don’t have to run the gauntlet of them to unlock the place.

And of course, yesterday, no matter what I did, I couldn’t get the printer to print in black only, which meant I had to dig up some cash from the piggy bank to go get a box of inks. I love what this printer does, for the most part, but I sure don’t like fighting with it to make it print in black, only. So there went the yogurt and rice pudding money. *sigh*

If I could only go without my pills, I would be able to skip a few meals. :o|

It was 12 Fs when I walked the dog this morning. But a warm front’s coming.

It will be nice if it can warm up the apartment a little more. Our bedroom has 2 outside walls and it gets chilly in there.

Maybe the washer ate them.

I can say from experience that washing machines occasionally have a confluence of events, probably related to the movement of the agitator and the sloshing of the water, that can catapult clothing into alternate dimensions. I have matched socks across the dimensional barrier although the issue of time makes it difficult to gather them all.

I’m sure it was a wonderful poem for people whose primary memories of a window don’t come from horror movies.

And the things the camera sees outside the window that the protagonist doesn’t see.

That give me the willies.

Did you manage to come up with anything for that letter I sent for you to comment on?

I managed to pack a box of books this morning, and will try to pack another one before I throw in the sponge today, since I built two boxes.

Right now, I want to finish the letter I started to my grandson. Then I want to make some brownies. Just because!

Yeah, I’ve been thinking about it. Will get it to you today.

Whenever. I was just curious.

It rained today, the wind has been blowing, and I managed to get two boxes of books packed. The only thing is, I can’t lift them to put them outside. :o|

People need a reason to make brownies?

Absolutely not! Now that they are in the oven, I'll have to see about making some chocolate frosting. I need a reward for doing laundry, making the bed and packing two boxes of books, and brownies are the perfect reward!

Books are safer indoors. I have a pot of soup frozen to the cement out back, but I’m thawing the pot I could pick up.

The boxes would be up against the outside bedroom wall, which is well inside the patio, so they would be protected from the weather. And the gate keeps stray dogs and coyotes from trying to make a foray into the patio.

I also have a small stack of books to take up to the on-site library in the morning, since I don’t want them.

Zeke sent me a text this morning, saying he was on his way into Vegas, where he had to report for jury duty, but said if I wanted, he would meet me in the morning (0500) to give me an update on Chuck.

I’ve heard nothing, and I don’t even have the name of the place to call and get an update from those who know.

And now, to go make some frosting...

Sent. The girls are making some vanilla chai from Teavana that they found in the pantry. I can’t remember when DP and I went to Teavana ... two years ago? ... but it’s been in sealed containers so it should be fresh enough to brew up.

Sunday School is cancelled tonight because some of the school districts didn’t have class because of the cold. Cub Scouts has been called off from the top (the Cubmaster), but the Wolf den could still meet, if they want to, because I have the key to the church and the alarm code. I’ll see what they say. I’d like them to see the mold I’ve been growing the last several weeks!

No, the cement is dry: it’s been there since we moved in. Some people call it “the patio,” but I’ve seen a patio. I call it “the cement patch.” It’s between the kitchen door and the herb garden, and then there’s the jasmine/rose trellis where Tom the Mocker lives.
