After generations of his family spent their lives as outlaws for making the infamous Irish poitín, Pádraic Ó Griallais has finally been able to carry out the family business in the open just under a decade after the spirit was outlawed.
Taking a career break from his job as a high school teacher to establish a new business based on his old family recipe, Ó Griallais is free to produce and sell the highly alcoholic spirit as he pleases without the interference of the Gardaí [Irish police], who hounded the previous poitín distillers in his family with raids to put a stop to the production of the beverage that was outlawed from 1661 to 1997 due to excise regulations.
The production of the spirit was regulated by the Irish Department of Agriculture in 1997 but only under their specific regulations. Luckily the regulations still allow Ó Griallais to use the botanical bogbean that grows around his familys homeland around Indreabhán, County Galway, that makes their specific recipe so special.

Back from Wally’s, where I got two more rolls of tape and three more boxes, since “the end of February” is closer and I don’t want to get caught in a panic because I kept putting off packing “things.”
I have to sort through the bags in the linen closet (space bags, storage size) and decide what to keep and what to give away. So there are things to keep me busy...
It will be “at least” the end of February before I hear from Utah, but I want to have as much done as I can do between now and then.
And now, for my next trick, a steroid treatment! YAY! (I should have done that before I went to Wally’s!)
It is true that the end of February is nearer than it has been!
I’m going to go dress warmly now.
I dressed warmly to go to Wally’s, but when I took out the trash I didn’t bother to dress warmly. I wasn’t planning on staying out by the Dumpster...
Hibiscus tea is brewing and I have yet to sort the pills for the next five days, but that’s OK: They will wait. ;o]
So now, I’m going to read a bit and open the curtains so the sun can have a way into the room, if it breaks through the clouds. But not necessarily in that order of eventing.
It's here!
Cute kitten!
Baby lion!
No sunshine today. But I’m working on “stuff.” I hope to have another load for the thrift store, soon.
Saturday morning and the devices say it’s 21 degrees out there in heavy snow.
It sure is pretty when looking through a window at it.
This dweller of NYC has a simple rule for safe driving in winter weather.
Stay out of the car until the roads are clear.
It’s when I don’t follow that rule that I get into trouble.
It’s pretty here, too. Elen’s just decided she’s going to go outdoors and experience it. DP and I brought some soup in from the back step. It wasn’t quite frozen, more slushy.
I just transferred some data cards from the old Rolodex to the new one, and the chairs I have to sit in at the table are the plastic patio variety. My hips locked. Trying to stand up was a very painful, very slow process. This is NOT going to work.
I should check the thrift store to see if they have and kitchen/dining chairs when I have some money.
My curiosity is getting the better of me: Why was the soup on the back step?
"Refrigerator."
If we were going to put in the official refrigerator, we'd have had to get out containers or use freezer bags or something, but with the outside fridge, we just put the covers on the pots and put them three steps from the door.
I love to see freshly fallen snow, but I do NOT want to be out in it! Not to walk and not to drive. Which is probably why I think Mt Charleston in winter is very beautiful.
Seems obvious enough. Putting it on the front steps might discourage visitors.
My bad. I knew that. *blush*
This is a good indication of why I’m no longer gainfully employed...
If “visitors” are hungry enough to take our leftovers, they can have them. Just bring the pots back, please.
Since Christmas is officially over, Pat has taken our few bits of indoor décor back up to the attic. We’ll leave the outdoor stuff up until the weather is pleasant.
The four-footed kind don’t remove the pots.
Ooooh, good one! I can always find something to complain about the weather.
