Black bobcat snared in N.B.(Canada), only 12th ever recorded in North America

A (Cocagne) New Brunswick trapper received an unexpected gift on Christmas Day—a rare melanistic bobcat.

Studies show there has only been one other black bobcat caught in Canada.

"I thought it was a house cat," said Oswald McFadden, who has run the same trapline for the last decade.

"When I saw the tail I knew it wasn't a house cat. Then I looked at the ears, I knew it was definitely a bobcat."

Melanism is a genetic trait that displays a black-coloured pigment and can often be found in species like squirrels and jaguars. Much like jaguars, this bobcat's spots and markings can still be seen in bright lights...

I still side with the overly large house cat theory, but then again... I'm not a hunter and I couldn't tell a Bobcat from a Cougar. Though, it is rather large for a house cat.

Speaking of Cougars, earlier this year and farther north in the Canadian province of New Brunswick somebody claimed they had seen a Black Cougar, and they even had some fuzzy film of it... Maybe it was just another Black Bobcat, making that siting a potential number 13 in terms of known Black Bobcats. Oh... And the only one that's still living at that.

I can hardly wait for the PETA crowd to ring in with their vitriol spiel regarding cruelty to animals. I imagine this creature will make a fine mount, or maybe even a fine shawl.

BTW - Cocagne is pronounced 'Cocaine' in English and 'Co-can' in French.

That’s the foundation of Canada... Killing animals and selling their fur. The fur trade and wood were our main exports, until we discovered oil in Alberta. Now it’s oil, fur and wood.

I came across a Lynx in the woods about 25 years ago while deer hunting, Allegheny area.
I saw the Lynx 3 time during that week of hunting season.
The third time I saw it it was trailed by 2 smaller Lynx. I watched it for about an hour. It was teaching its young how to hunt rabbits.

anti-hunters ignorance is nauseating.

One of the worse things I have ever seen was the dead deer in every field due to disease caused from overpopulation.

Learn about real conservation and responsible hunting verses the emotional driven liberal ideology that has poisoned every fascit of entertainment and public education and obviously a lot of Freepers.

Controlled hunting is the best way to protect wildlife and promote real effective conservation.

Why kill a rare beautiful creature for no reason. Unbelievable.
