We can disagree with his politics, but he really was a true American hero to fly the Mercury space capsule around the Earth when it was still relatively untested (orbital flights with chimpanzees proved to be more stressful on the animal than anticipated in terms of G forces).

Truly the end of an era--the last survivor of the Mercury Seven astronauts.
