Just as Alice Through the Looking Glass hit theatres in May, a judge ordered a restraining order against its star, Johnny Depp, after his wife, Amber Heard, alleged he physically and verbally abused her. The couple reached a $7 million divorce settlement in August, but not before the $190 million sequel to Alice in Wonderland crashed at the box office.
Thanks to recent ticket booth losses, Depp is this year's most overpaid actor: His last three movies returned just $2.80 at the box office for every $1 he was paid on them. While the damning accusations did not impact his earnings during our scoring period, they look set to damage his box office prospects for months to come. It's the latest bad career news for Depp, who has suffered some high profile misses including last year's Mortdecai and 2014's Transcendence.

I’ll take the roles for half the price.
She hasn’t done that many movies lately. She’ll be in Maleficent 2, and she’s been doing one of the voices in the Kung Fu Panda movies. She’s done more directing lately, instead of actual acting.
Johnny Depp is a great actor. He may play some offbeat rolls, but that why he is a great actor.
Why are these recent movie failures HIS fault?
The Ninth Gate, Blow, Finding Neverland, Benny & Joon, and Public Enemies are all great films and Johnny Depp is superb.
Dark Shadows, Alice in Wonderland and Pirates of the Caribbean series are entertaining, FUN, movies, and Johnny Depp does a fine acting job in them.
If not for Captain Sparrow, he'd be largely unknown. He seems to go out of his way to choose non-commercial, quirky films.
I liked the first "Pirates" movie when it came out; could barely make it thru the second one. I don't even know how many they have made since or if they are even still making them.
ship! ship load.
I liked Sweeney Todd and Sleepy Hollow (Depp and Burton).
I agree, he's done superb work, especially in The Ninth Gate. I happened to like his acting in the Alice movies, more so than the Pirate movies.
I enjoyed “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” (but esp Leo Dicaprio) and “Black Mass,” “Edward Scissorhands,” other Depp movies from 20 years ago. Don’t see many of his more current things.
Sometimes that changes- drastically.
It’s too bad so much of Hollywood is crazy.
Depp has the right persona for the Alice fantasies. The problem is that the dreck that was produced has NOTHING in common with the Lewis Carroll books.
Haven’t been excited about ANYTHING he’s been in. Don’t care for him period.
I think he’s a great actor...
...loved all his films.
I wouldn’t be able to pick Johnny Depp in a line-up of similar looking men.
The a$$hats in Hollywood “lose” money on every production, for tax purposes.
I actually enjoyed Mortdecai very much. But I acknowledge that it wouldn’t suit all tastes.
That could describe most actors. I haven’t seen a movie he’s made that I actually liked in a very long time.
I still don’t get why my husband and one of our kids enjoy those pirates of the caribbean movies ;)
You took the words right out of my mouth. They should have stopped after the first one-I didn’t even bother to watch the third one due to the disappointing second movie.
It should be titled ‘All liberal actors are overpaid.’
