Astronaut Buzz Aldrin Medically Evacuated From South Pole

American astronaut Buzz Aldrin has been medically evacuated from the South Pole, according to the National Science Foundation and a private tourism group.

Aldrin, 86, was visiting Antarctica when "his condition deteriorated," according to White Desert, which organizes luxury tourism trips to the icy continent. The group said Aldrin was evacuated on the first available flight out of the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station to the McMurdo Station on the Antarctic coast under the care of a doctor with the U.S. Antarctic Program.

He is in stable condition, White Desert said.

The National Science Foundation provided the flight for Aldrin, who it described as an "ailing visitor." Aldrin will be flown to New Zealand next, the NSF said.

Earlier in the week, the legendary astronaut posted photos of himself preparing for his trip to Antarctica.

"South Pole here I come!" he captioned one photo on Twitter on Tuesday. He was slated to be in the South Pole through Dec. 12, according to his website.

Aldrin became the second man to walk on the moon after Neil Armstrong when their two-man crew of Apollo 11 made a lunar landing in 1969.

Was he looking for Hitler’s secret base or the hidden portal connecting the North and South poles?

Buzz is a great hero who endured much while he pioneered much (rendezvous and docking for example).

He is a hero who deserves respect. He was a combat pilot in Korea, a test pilot and an astronaut on Gemini and Apollo.

The fact that he battle many skeletons in his closet while at the same time advocating space travel should put him in the forefront of the world’s pioneers.

It is sad to see a man who walked on the moon have to actually defend that act in the public forum by conspiracy nuts and UFO chasers...

At 86 he has no business being there.
They have only basic medical facilities, and often
times the weather prevents anything from flying in or out.

He was there on tour. Call it the bucket list.

I guess you believe Col Aldrin is beneath you right since you mock him while the guy is sick.

And who are you???

That’s right a nobody...

At least he wasn’t lying to steal my basic civil rights like Mark Kelly. It’s good that some astonauts aren’t lying, hypocritical, fascist gun grabbers. #nopetraeus

An odd thing to say about a guy that walked on the moon.

I don’t know about that but a relative saw him at MIT a couple of years ago and she said he was rude and arrogant.

True that! All those early astronauts were heroes to me as a kid. They were all doing dramatic remarkable stuff, heroic stuff, back in the 60’s when it seemed the country’s future was in the stars. It was a great time to be alive to witness history being made.

Paleeeze! Col Norman Vaughn who accompanied Byrd on his Antarctic Expedition in 1928-30.

To honor Norman for his contributions as chief dog driver, Admiral Byrd named a mountain after him. On December 16, 1994, three days shy of his 89th birthday, Norman fulfilled a lifelong dream. He climbed his namesake, Mount Vaughan, a 10,302' Antarctic peak.

So there it is. :)
