It has never happened to me like this before. Yesterday, I stopped at a little taqueria just east of Austin to get something to eat. As I was waiting, a big, stocky black guy holding a roll of paper towels under his arm came up to me and asked me if I wanted my windshield cleaned for $1. I said, "No, I'm good." He kept on, saying "Hey, just give me $1. Can't you see I'm trying to work to get money for a taco?"
I politely declined, telling him my finances were tight due to car repairs and trying to pay for school for my son. He began to get upset and then looked at me and said, "You're racist!" and some other babble I didn't quite catch. He looked at my wedding ring and said he used to have one, but he sold it. I asked him, "How can I be racist if my wife is a native of Mexico?" "Why would I marry a Mexican if I were racist?" He shot back, "She's not black!"
The poor little woman in the taco trailer told him she'd make him a taco for free(to shut him up) and he settled down. Now, my question is this: Is this a hate crime, trying to extort money off of people as they go to a taco trailer trying to get something to eat? What if I were to have tried that on someone? Police probably would have been called. This has left me with a really bad taste in my mouth. I blame Obama and all Democrats for this. They have so divided people that a lot of blacks have been enabled in treating everyone else in an abusive manner. My CCW was in the car which kept me from telling the man what I wanted to tell him and things probably would not have ended well for the street thief. How sad to put oneself in a position to die over trying to extort $1 off of someone. This nation is going to hell in a handbasket.
It actually happened once. But it was about six years ago and it was a salvation army bell ringer. She didn’t know how to operate it so we worked on it together to get it to work.
If a guy did pull it out I’d say that I don’t trust those things. :-)
The easiest deflection is to say that you don’t have any cash. The more devious panhandlers watch for cash transactions and know you just broke a twenty or whatever, so that doesn’t always work. If they get aggressive with you, you’ve got to either leave quickly or get aggressive in return. Some will follow, so leaving isn’t always the best reaction. If you’re going to get accosted, it’s good to have a crowd, for witnesses and for assistance, sometimes strangers will help, they don’t like it either.
:-)
“he said, go away”
Same thing happened to me in Cleveland. Parked on a side street as Bo Loong’s lot was full. I got out of my car and a yute gang turned around and headed towards me. I got back in my car and drove away. Found a cop a block away, and told him what was going on, and that these punks were out to cause trouble. He told me, “Go to a different restaurant.”
Not responding to them is usually the best tactic IMO. You need to watch them cautiously while you ignore them though in case things escalate. Whenever I walk into the parking lot I scan the area for trouble before proceeding so I can just avoid them altogether. All the bullsh***er drug addicts have helped to complicate things for the legitimate down trodden and I’m just not interested in pulling my wallet out for a junkie in a parking lot.
Come on up to NW Arkansas. We have lots of Mexicans besides us honkies and luckily that’s it! And we all get along just fine thanks!
The guy had his own paper towels and only asked for ONE DOLLAR??
This should have been an amicable deal. Clean windshield for a dollar.
Sad that it became confrontational and the conversation on the difference in skin tone resulted.
Try smiling at strangers - it works;0
"Just deal with it"???
OK.
I can do that.
Do you suppose the court will approve my methods?
Bums in San Francisco used to ask me if I could spare a dollar or two - I’d say yeah and keep walking. F - em.
leadership? they won’t do anything.
Americans need to stand up for themselves and say no.
in this case, club him and hold him for attempted theft / extortion.
Where I was headed to work, major no no to get caught with it on me. Try to understand.
Let me explain to you how this works. Black people are black people. Brown people which are non black or black people who can pass as white are not black people. They don’t know about slavery or racism. They only count when there is an election or a strike. But they are not a minority. They are just people who steal black people’s jobs and black people’s hand outs. And if your white you are racist. And Asians are right out. Even though Asians may have picked more cotton than all the slaves in America and they may have done it in the last one or two generations, their plight does not register.
This isn’t new. 25 years ago at a MARTA station here in Atlanta a drunk black guy started harrasing my sister for $5 while we were buying tokens. Blacks have been trying successfully to intimidate whites for money since time began.
Your only problem is technique. Do not try to reason with black people. In your best Sam Kinnison voice yell “GTF away from me”. That’s what they understand. It worked for me at the MARTA station and countless other times. :-)
It’s not racism. It is desperation. That is a dangerous thing.
Buy the man a taco but tell him you need to tell him about Jesus first.
Rochester NY has a great public market there on weekends...we were there when a guy asked for some money for breakfast...I said “better yet - lets you and me go, and I will buy you the biggest breakfast they have” (I hate to see anyone hungry...Im Italian) at which point he says, no, I wanted smokes....I said I cant help you hurt yourself - & he respected that, said thanks anyway and moved on
Many of those street corner/off ramp/intersection panhandlers make pretty good money selling flowers or washing windshields.
A DFW TV station did a special on them in the early 1990s. One guy said he made around $25,000 per year panhandling. That, of course, was tax free and no deductions, except for the paper towels/window cleaner or 5¢ rose. That was certainly a ‘living wage’ in the early 90s.
BM: Because I'm black.
JWG: So?
BM: So? You're ancestors enslaved my ancestors.
JWG: No, while your ancestors were swinging in the trees, mine were out making civilization (Jews)...
End of true story.
Today, a white man refusing this kind of demand could easily be killed. In the late 60’s one could still speak his/her mind openly without fear...
The Romans lasted for hundreds of years.
I know you are right, but on a slender gal like me, there is literally no place on my body where it wouldn't print most obviously. Not even the fancy girdle type holsters. Just gotta wear the purse crossbody and have an easy access pocket ready. I am not willing or able to change my entire wardrobe to bulky clothes.
