The two young Somali sisters sat at a table in the central registration center signing up for what would become their next big challenge in their journey to America – school.
They came to enroll in the Buffalo Public Schools at an old building on Ash Street, an Ellis Island of sorts for thousands of immigrants and refugees entering an education system that has struggled over the years to keep up with their growing numbers.
Many show up speaking no English. Others may have had little formal education in their home countries. Most encounter vast cultural differences.
The City of Buffalo has taken in thousands of immigrants and refugees in recent years, and it’s reflected in many of its schools. More than 85 different languages are spoken throughout the district, but that number can change by the day.
English language learners now make up 15 percent of the district’s enrollment, and as a whole, they are among the lowest-performing, state figures show. They also are the fastest-growing segment.

Speaking the language is only one aspect of assimilation; their other cultural norms are incompatible with becoming an American.
Don’t forget the Buffalo billion- believed by the federal attorney to be a slush fund for Cuomo’s friends. Love our one party government!
And the ACLU will demand an interpreter for each language at taxpayer’s cost.

Then on the main page they greet you, there’s a picture of a 10 year old boy dressed as a girl and it says “celebrating trans-gender month “
Progressives are really sick in the head.
And the poor homeowners are stuck supporting this “public school” racket.
You home-school? Private school? Too bad. Embrace the suck.
Disgusting!
Deport illegals!
Expel muslims!
Close the border!
Repatriate!
Utter stupidity.
Learn English or return to native country.
This might be why taxes are so high.
A hundred years ago, schools also had immigrant children speaking various languages.
The solution was English immersion. No teacher says anything in any language but English. The kids will pick it up. Immigrant kids from a century ago did.
The immigrant children learned most of it on the streets and playgrounds, much tougher than teachers. Teachers merely provided structure and discipline.
Sigh.
Gone are the days when newly-arrived immigrants took pride in learning English and assimilating.
Now everyone arrives with a chip on his/her shoulder, a shopping list of demands, and a hand out for funds from working stiffs.

As a fairly well educated and well read individual of 78+ years, I don’t think I can even name 85 languages!
