How does one kill crazy ants (tawny ants) here in the South Central Texas region?

How does one kill crazy ants in a do-it-yourself way? We've put down Boric Acid and flea spray, both of which kill them. But, they keep coming back by the thousands. Any ideas?

I use Amdro to kill Fire Ants.

Crazy ants aren't fire ants. They probably think Amdro is a nice before dinner cocktail. Crazy ants are immune to most pesticides.

Terro brand works incredibly well for me.....I think it is sugar syrup and borax....they drink it up like crazy and take the sugar/borax back to the nest. Takes a few weeks to see results...so be patient...worked for me

Terro worked well for us during the drought years when ants move indoors to find moisture and food. It is very unnerving to use at first as you watch trails of ants move in and out of the counters and floors. After 4-5 days, the number of ants decreases a great deal, and as you indicated, the ants disappear after a few weeks.

I am not sure if Terro will work for the ants in question. I understand there are a couple of any types that it won't work for.

Call the Orkin Man

While prevention is always important to reduce suitable ant habitats, this is one pest that should never be controlled by using do-it-yourself strategies. If you have tawny crazy ants, contact an experienced pest management professional right away. Get ahead of the ants by seeking the advice, recommendations and expertise of your pest specialist and begin the ant management program before the population explodes in the warmer months. In addition, if the control program is only partially effective, the ant populations will more than likely rebound and continue to create problems.

Don’t forget the molten aluminum. Sell the tunnel castings as ant art

Wife buys something called Terro. Little tray of stuff they are attracted to and take back to poison the hive.

Not sure of this type, but in North Florida, I have had success with two different types with the same solution. Fire ants and also the little black ones I find making mounds in my driveway and sidewalk cracks.

My solution is regular (NOT INSTANT) grits not cooked. It is important not to sprinkle it on the mound but lightly around it. The workers find the food outside of the mound and take it in for the drones and most importantly, the queen to eat. Once ingested and combined with fluids, it does the growing thing inside of them growing more than the capacity of their bodies. As I am told.

Whatever it is, it works every time I try it.

Find the nest and kill that first.

Then kill the ants.

I’ve found Amdro to be virtually worthless, though my problem was with carpenter ants.

What worked for me were these products (you need both):

http://store.doyourownpestcontrol.com/maxforce-carpenter-ant-bait-gel
http://store.doyourownpestcontrol.com/advance-375a-select-ant-bait

Ants love this stuff.

Bottom line-anything you can buy in a Lowe’s type store is not likely to work.

I’ve had all sorts of ants over the years, the only off the shelf bait that works is the Terro Liquid baits.

One finds it, brings his friends, pretty soon they’re having a party with the stuff and in a few days that colony is done.

If they’re those big red/orange boogers, I think napalm may be your only choice of weapon.
