Squirrel breaks into B.C. home, trashes the place

OAK BAY, B.C. — A bowl of nuts helped officers in Oak Bay, B.C., tail a suspected burglar.

But as Const. Sheri Lucas investigated what appeared to be a break-in at a home in the Victoria suburb, she quickly realized the suspect already had a tail — its own.

Lucas had been called by homeowners who found their house trashed when they returned from an extended vacation.

As Lucas and her partner surveyed the mess, they spotted an empty bowl of nuts, shells strewn everywhere and some tell-tale gnaw marks in chocolate left on a counter.

That’s when a panicked and angry squirrel was found cornered in the house and the two officers used a towel and broom to scoop it up and set it free.

The homeowners were advised to block vents that may have been the point of entry and Lucas says the destruction left by the rampant rodent was extraordinary.

“We aren’t sure why there was so much damage,” she says.

“Maybe the chocolate gave it a high it didn’t expect?”

There was a story a couple years ago about a guy who got attacked by a crazy squirrel and ended up in the hospital.

I had to clean up after a squirrel who got into the basement kitchen of the chapel I attended while in college. It took me a several days to clean up the mess and make the kitchen usable again. The squirrel chewed its way in through a 1” thick plywood door on the exhaust fan.

I’ll bet it was fun for your son to see an animal up close.
Their quick head movements, their long feathery tails. The blended colors that make up their seasonal fur coats.
Loving or caring for animals can bring the kindness out in most people.

My borzoi would have made short work of that varmint and I could have skipped feeding her dinner that day if you know what I mean.

"The only squirrel worth anything is one completely albino. We had one near our home in the 50s when I grew up. the rest can go eat scat for all I care."

Why?

A squirrel trapped in a house will try anything to escape.

Squirrels are from hell.
Make holes in your house and chew off the rafters tails, then
chew electrical wires that burn the houses...thousands every year.
I got eleven out of my attic. Made my day, releasing them in an open field where a red tail hawk made good use of them.
Squirrel jihad.

Leave the house with a window open, and the squirrel will escape.

Bernhard Goetz, the NY subway shooter, had a pet gray squirrel on YouTube. I noticed that Bernie never gave his pet squirrel the opportunity to bite him!

Of all the squirrels in New England, the red squirrel is tops in destructive abilities.

I squirrel-proofed a feeder by threading a large piece of plastic above the feeder, then crimped split-shot fishing weight to hold it up. They finally gave up after falling off several times.
I like squirrels enough to plant a pin-oak, but they, and the chipmunks, live in their world, not mine. My bulldog keeps them honest too.
