So Conor Gillaspie in 2016 is Marco Scutaro from 2012 or Travis Ishikawa from 2014 or Cody Ross from 2010, at least for one enormous Wild-Card game and that means it could go on and on again
And Madison Bumgarner in 2016 is Madison Bumgarner, the perpetual postseason legend.
Thats a two-paragraph summary of the Giants scintillating 3-0 Wild-Card victory over the Mets tonight, and yes, obviously, the patterns and connections from the previous three Giants postseason trips are impossible to ignore.
You know who probably understands this better than anybody? Thatd be the Cubs, who now face the Giants in the NLDS, starting with Games 1 and 2 at Wrigley Field on Friday and Saturday.
And just having Bumgarner out there, throwing up 0s, calms everybody on the Giants roster, and just knowing that hes on the team sets them up in every postseason series.
I think the Giants werent as stressed as another team would be going up against somebody like Noah Syndergaard, because they knew their guy probably would match Syndergaard, and would stay on the mound longer than Syndergaard.
Key point: I am not in New York and am not covering the Giants in this first week of the postseason and the best reporting and analysis, as always, will come from those who are.
But I covered most of those previous Giants World Series runsin 2010, 2012 and 2014and what we all know is that the Giants are very, very difficult to kill off in October, even when theyre matched up against a more talented (on paper) opponent.
The Cubs are more talented. The Cubs are the most talented team in baseball.

Anybody but the Cubs. Chicago deserves to be beaten mercilessly for another century.
Go Senators! I get them on AM 1500 (WFED).
I guess this is the drama we been waiting for all summah ...
This is a rough inning.
But it ain’t over til it’s over!
Unlikely hero! Pinch hit 2-run homer by Chris Heisey. 4-3 now.
Jansen for 3 innings?
The ESPN radio announcers are asking the same question. They think Roberts will try to get 3 innings out of him.
What in the world? If you are going to PR for Robinson, why not do it with Turner up? Just makes no sense.
Edit: I guess it was prophetic on Dusty’s part, LOL.
Announcers say Roberts may have made a mistake taking Rich Hill out in the 3rd, and thus overextending the bullpen.
Base hit by Bryce Harper!
Long fly. Just one fly ball.
This is a long at bat for Werth.
They don’t want to walk him with Murphy coming up.
Do they walk Murphy now?
Oh man, strike 3.
Take it personally, Two-Bags.
Yep, walk him, I don’t why they delayed so long.
This inning has lasted an hour!
OK, 4-3 at the end of the 7th. Anybody’s game. A lot better than 4-1.
Nightmarish inning. Silver lining: can Jansen really go 3 innings effectively? He looked shaky going 2 before, and that was a stressful inning. Dark clouds: Dodgers still up 1, Perez is still on the mound, Dusty still in the dugout, and Hendley still coaching 3rd base.
If all innings lasted that long it’d be like cricket! :)
