The “Should I stay or should I go” song is playing in my head right now. I live just East of I-95 in North Brevard and the eye will go right over us (according to Channel 2’s guys). Decisions, decisions...
Prayers up. . . .
I had the good fortune of living in Cape Canaveral a few months while I was doing an internship. Lovely place and all my best goes out to everyone there!
Live central Merritt Island. Family members talked it over. We decided to board up windows and stay. Been in same house 36 years and never left before. But we know, we’ve never had a storm of this magnitude. Have until Thursday afternoon to make up mind to leave or not. Have daughter who lives on east side of Orlando and that’s where I’ll run to.
My niece is in Pt St Lucie and she is bunkered down in her 3rd floor apt. Her 2 oldest girls have gone through hurricanes before, but her 7 yo son is autistic and is terrified because all he has heard at school and on TV. Couldn’t get no batteries or nothing but her ex was “nice” enough to bring by two flashlights and a few gallons of water for her and the kids. Needless to say I started out the week worried about my new Uninsured home in the coastal Carolina’s. (NC), now we will be worried about my niece and the kids. Prayers to all in Matthew path!
Keep me included. My not-too-bright ex and dogs are going to ride it out in Melbourne.
Prayers for all your safety !
Prayers for your, your family’s, your community’s, and your state’s safety!!
It’s been a while (1969) since was at Cocoa beach—seem to remember was rather flat and of low elevation going west from the coast. What are the predictions for storm surge in this specific case? Most everyone whom has been injured or died in a hurricane, succumbed to the hazard of the storm surge flooding, rather than wind driven debris.
Had a friend with a business on Hwy.90 in Biloxi, Ms.—they bailed for a safer inland location during Katrina. Afterwards, the only remains of the commercial structure was bolts protruding from the concrete foundation. The surge was exceptional in height; and, carried perhaps ten miles past the beach into the back-bay area.
The winds along the coast of Florida may be higher than those experienced along the gulf coast in the 2005 landfall. The storm’s approach to land will likely not drive a similar surge (29 feet at Cantore’s bunker position). The winds alone may be sufficient for destruction.
Electric power out for one to two weeks—fuel, food, water will likely remain in short supply for an extended period (100 miles inland from the Katrina landfall, power was out for 11 days—fuel shipments for phone backup power was threatened with high-jack.) Standing structures may be poor shelter afterward. Insects will be an issue afterward—potentially dengue, malaria, zika, etc. blown in from other areas. If not prepared (this moment) to be self sufficient for the next two weeks, reconsider evacuation.
FReeper friend kind enough to take us in.
Brevard will likely be recovering a long time from this one.
Stay away from outside walls and windows, and seek protection from flying projectiles driven through the building exterior. Interior hallway and storage closets offer the most shielded spaces within a dwelling. A powerful hurricane wind is similar in destructive potential as compared to a tornado.
Storm surge from hurricane often trap occupants on the first and second levels of structures. Climbing to a second or third floor may present other hazards. It is very common to suffer roof damage; or, loss of a roof in a sustained wind which fatigues nails and other fasteners of the construction.
A designated shelter is often the better option.
Stay safe Freepers that are in the path and prayers for your safety.

My FIL is on A1A just north of Sebastian Inlet. In fact, Jim Cantore now reporting live from across the street from him. He and his lady friend have chosen to ignore mandatory evacuation and think they're fine. We are sincerely hoping and praying they change their mind and GET OUT. In any case, I sure appreciate these threads. Thank you.
And BTW, WTF is this nonsense about the storm looping around and making a second landfall as if to finish the job!
FRpers and Trump supporters in the area mentioned in this thread, get ready, stay safe, and Godspeed!
I was at that awesome rally in Melbourne and yes, we are worth saving. Scary times. Prayers for all in the path, INCLUDING me.
ps, I am going to lose it if I don’t have my Internet.
I just left Satellite Beach yesterday morning...
But not because you told me to, gov.
So we’re staying after putting up some window protection. Stay safe everyone and I may not post for awhile as we’re among the last to get power back (1 block from I-95 but only 4 people on the power line).
Checking in time ... Prayers that all our FRiends made it through the storm.
