One backhand blow. One death. Seven years in prison.
Thats the punishment for Roger Perry, the drifter who fatally decked Miami Beachs Mohammed Hussein, a crime that was caught on video and that shocked South Florida.
Back in December, Perry was standing in line at the M&L Food Market, 7446 Collins Ave., when Hussein approached him to tell him that he was in the wrong checkout lane. They exchanged some heated words and Perry backhanded Hussein, 58.
Hussein, a father of two, fell to the ground and hit his head, causing severe brain trauma. Hussein was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center, where he lingered in a coma for two weeks before dying.
Manslaughter
FWIW A number of times I’ve been in Wal-Mart with a full basket searching for the shortest full checkout line and a 20 items or less cashier will flag me in to her line.
I always make sure she’s going to tell the people who come in behind me why I’m there. But even that doesn’t seem to stop the ‘glaring’.
1. A hit to the temple can easily kill.
2. What was the insult?
Yeah, well, it’s suburban Chicago. Everyone at Aldi are white, Christian, redneck, crackers.
Bingo! At least someone got it right on this thread. In all likelihood, he did not intend to kill. However, he is responsible for the result of his actions (head hitting floor and victim dying). Manslaughter.
Yes, that’s exactly the point; knock someone over or knock him out - he can get a fractured skull and die from impact with the floor, street, or sidewalk.
It poses a significant problem for those who carry - i.e., do you shoot an attacker who is “unarmed”? You may get busted for using non-reciprocal force and put on trial for murder. On the other hand, if you take a punch, fall down, and fracture your skull, you may die from it.
This is all due to wild Westerns, in which guys slug it out endlessly, and yet emerge dusting themselves off and grinning at the “grit” of the opponent while having all teeth intact and no bones broken. It’s a fairy tale.
