In a hail of gunfire, Conroe jewelry store owner Jeffery Turner Jr. made the decision to shoot back – with his AK-47 rifle – at four men who opened fire on his customers and staff during an attempted robbery Monday afternoon.

In the aftermath of the bullet spray, one robber lay dead in the doorway among shattered glass; while Turner, his employees and customers were left shaken but unharmed.

The three other robbers fled the scene in the Conroe West strip center in the 4800 block of Texas 105 West.

“You always have a right to defend yourself, especially when the robber shoots at you,” said Turner’s attorney E. Tay Bond, who said all the witnesses and Turner reported the four men started shooting first. “Jeff does keep an AK-47 for defense purposes.”

"four black males dressed in all black entered Jeff’s Jewelry around lunchtime and demanded jewelry, purses and other items."

Other items?

Perhaps some coordinating shoes and a stunning jacket?

I liked how the employees refused to let the boss do all of the heavy lifting.

I'd say an AK would be an appropriate choice in that situation.

“You always have a right to defend yourself....”

...unless you live in a Liberal state.

That didn’t go the way they had expected, I don’t think.

I’m pretty sure they didn’t expect the shop owner to come up with a Kalashnikov.

Needs more time at the range. He should have bagged at least two.

You did see he was using an AK, right? AKs are not exactly known for accuracy... :P

Plenty accurate enough for inside the jewelry store, or nearby. The accuracy issues only come to play at long range, say 200 yards and up.

I understand that in the moment you have to defend yourself, but what was his backstop? Were his rounds going outside and across the parking lot?

Depends on which AK he was using, honestly. Short or long barrel, what sights, etc. Some AKs I’ve seen are pretty damn miserable even at close range.

He should get a bit of a pass on it, honestly. The other thing is that we don’t know that he didn’t hit any of the others, if his field of fire was obstructed (remember, there were customers in the store - bad idea to accidentally shoot them) or really much of anything else of how it unfolded.

If this is the same store I remember being in the news some years ago for a prior robbery, he’ll have video and it should be released soon.

Not in the following states. You would not be authorized to use deadly force in self defense without "retreating". The following states impose some form of duty to retreat before using deadly self defense:
•Arkansas
•Connecticut
•Delaware
•Hawaii (of course)
•Iowa
•Maine
•Maryland (no surprise here)
•Massachusetts(no surprise here either)
•Missouri
•Minnesota
•Nebraska
•New Jersey (the home of anti-gun rino fat boy Christie)
•New York (Duty to help the robber carry your stuff to his car and then stand still to be shot. Self defense is probably the second most serious crime in NY)
•North Dakota
•Ohio
•Rhode Island
•Wisconsin
•Wyoming

When you are being shot at in an enclosed room I’m not sure there is anyplace left to retreat to.

Good info, including some surprises, like WY being on that list. Those of us covered by things like castle laws and no duty to retreat laws need to count our blessings.

Kudos to the store owner but the decision that he needed to keep an under-counter long-gun should be the indication it’s time to consider other measures. I’ve seen high-end watch and jewelry stores that have buzz-in systems so there must be a positive decision to allow somebody in the store.

I'm sure in HI, MA, MD, NJ, NY, etc. the government would find someplace you should have gone.

As Ron White once eloquently stated, In Texas, if you try to kill one of us, we’ll kill you back. That’s our policy.”
