The 20th century could easily be considered the golden age of guitar in popular music. You can hear it in the inventive blues and jazz guitar work that seemed to reinvent the instrument every decade if not every year or so, and you can especially hear it in the invention of the guitar-centric rock genre that became a cultural behemoth in the second half of the century. Popular music today often eschews the guitar in favor of studio-based arrangements, but the guitar players who made the greatest impact in the 1900s continue to influence popular music today. To celebrate their contributions to music and music history, were counting off five of the most influential guitarists of the 20th century, in chronological order.
1. Robert Johnson

Clapton, and Campbell???? MIA the list.
Jimi Hendrix - I could name 20 guitarists right now that we’re better by far than him - start with Ed Van Halen and end with Johnny Winter
David Gilmour - Pink FLoyd
Mark Knopfler - Dire Straits
Pete Townshend.
He’s not a soloist but the man can play the guitar.
If Randy Rhodes had lived longer he would have done many more incredible things in music.
Chuck himself said it was just Boogie Woogie piano played on guitar.
I’ll add Leo Kottke.
Bert Jansch
Great pick - Stole my "addition."
Most influential, I think maybe:
Les Paul
Django Reinhardt
Jimi Hendrix
Muddy Waters
Tony Iommi / Keith Richards
Django Reinhardt
I completely agree with your additions, but I just have to ask -
Where the hell is Robin Trower?
Sure. I’ll disagree.
I don’t think Page has much talent.
Substitute Mississippi John Hurt, Johnny Winter, or Bill Nelson.
Add Phil Keaggy.
Which dumpster? And who are ya callin’ a P*ssy, Sister? ;-)
FReep on!
Chet Atkins is there and he would put Hank Garland at the top of his list.
I’m glad you named Eric Johnson.......let me add Chet Adkins....good choices you made.....;)
You need to listen to more Hendrix. I mean, down deep in the tracks. Eddie Van Halen would take issue with what you just said. He knows better.
SRV is okay. His brother Jimmy is by far a better guitarist.
Add Darrell Higham and RL Burnside.
Tony Rice has been the most influential in the bluegrass field but he would give the credit to Clarence White for his style.
George Benson “borrowed” much of his style from the GREAT Wes Mongomery who borrowed a similar style from Charlie Christian.
I just heard of her last week b/c of what someone put on my FB feed.
Gonna definitely check her out.
Based on what some others have written, she could really play!
