[history]
Neither booze nor drugs played a role in the boating accident that killed Miami Marlins pitching great Jose Fernandez, authorities said Sunday.
The 24-year-old star hurler and two male buddies died when their 30-foot boat crashed off Miami Beach around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Florida official said.

Terrible news about one of the best pitchers in MLB. Sympathies to his family and friends, his teammates, the Marlins organization, and Major League Baseball.

According to the authorities, alcohol was not involved.
Today was supposed to be his day to pitch, but Mattingly moved him back a day. Had he been scheduled for today, as planned, perhaps he wouldn’t have been out on the water in the wee hours.

The Miami Herald is saying that it hit a dock at a high rate of speed. At 3AM.I can't think of any explanation other than equipment failure, skipper inexperience or skipper intoxication. The Herald also said that the vessel was “well known to authorities”.
They'll obviously do a full autopsy on all three...including a toxicology report.

Coupled with the fact that one cannot see well at 3 AM, unless one is a cat.

My ex told me of some of her relatives at a wedding by the water. Heading backing back at night, they managed to hit a rock with what I'm assuming was a Boston Whaler type boat, 16'-23', maybe.
Bruises only.

Neither booze nor drugs played a role in the boating accident that killed Miami Marlins pitching great Jose Fernandez, authorities said Sunday. Too early to make such a blanket statement.I wonder if they actually said "there's no evidence of...",possibly meaning that there was no obvious sign of drugs or excessive alcohol consumption....liquor bottles strewn around the vessel.Booze bottles could have been thrown overboard for example.
My money's on booze.

Coupled with the fact that one cannot see well at 3 AM, unless one is a cat. That could be a factor...but hitting a dock at high speed? Maybe not.

He was Marlin. Where else would he be?

Looks like they hit a jetty, not a dock.

Been bummed out about this all morning.
He was really good. He had Tommy John and looked to have fully recovered.
Only 24 years old.

High speeding in the water at night is not exactly a boating best practice.
