I hadn’t known of his personal story prior to reading your post. Yes, now it’s even more tragic. Damn shame to lose great hero figures like this.
Fernandez was originally scheduled to start today against Atlanta. They pushed him back one day so he could start at home against the Mets. He's a phenomenal pitcher at home, and there's been a simmering feud between the Marlins and Mets over the last few years -- so they were altering their pitching rotation just to do as much damage to the Mets' playoff standing.
I'm sure he wouldn't have been out at 3:00 AM if he was scheduled to start today. Heck -- he wouldn't even have been in Miami.
Wow, what were they trying to do!? Jump the jetty?
High rate speed, middle of night..possibly alcohol involved = recipe for disaster
He was 7-0 career with a .99 ERA per baseball reference against the Nats, yeesh.

I erred not an ocean racer..maybe some night fishing ?
Interesting baseball history ...
The New York Yankees actually acquired Alex Rodriguez because of an incident related to one such contract. Third baseman Aaron Boone, the hero of the 2003 American League Championship Series who hit the game-winning home run in Game 7 against Boston, injured his knee playing basketball during the following off-season. The Yankees had the right to void his $5.75M/year contract as a result of this, and they did.
They were desperately in need of a starting third baseman, and the timing of the incident in January of 2004 was terrible because all of the top free agents had already been signed by then. That's why the Yankees went out and traded for Rodriguez, and moved him over to play third base.
They obviously missed the inlet and didn’t see or know what the boys mean.
As in Red Right Return
Boy = Bouys but spell check didn’t know that
I would think they still do. The team will suffer a real loss here.
I think you have a pretty solid conjecture there for sure. In 8 games against the Mets for his career he was 3-0. So mostly no decisions but no losses. He was 7-0 against the Nats in 10 games.

Yes, the course of events did make this possible.
It also made it possible for him to be in bed on time and avoid bad situations late at night too.
We make our own choices, and sometimes we don’t think of the possibilities.
I stand corrected on one point, though ... the Marlins and Braves were not playing in Atlanta this weekend. They were at home in Miami.
The pic in 53 shows the view from the beach. It appears that they just missed making it around the breakwall. What is that saying? Nothing good happens after midnight?
I had read he was originally scheduled to pitch today but that his start was pushed back til Monday. Had he remained today’s starter, be probably still be alive as I doubt he’d have stayed out late last night.
Yes, MLB contracts in particular ban a lot of off-field activities, I have learned. And some contracts are customized to the player’s known hobbies, etc. These clauses became unavoidable when MLB contracts began to go long-term and guaranteed.
He became a U.S. citizen recently.
Dark day in Miami, even though the sun is shining and it’s beautiful.
Of course that @#@#! Fernando Rodney will probably live to be 100.
Yep, the harbor just on other side..speeding & missed the turn.
It was a fishing boat, 32 foot CVS center console
Memory eternal.
Boating normally isn’t all that dangerous. At night you go slow and use a spot when approaching an inlet.
This was also a probably a manatee zone, they should have reduced speed way before they hit the rocks.
3am, a boat on the ocean..., what could go wrong?

Yep, being out at night on any body of water is tricky business. Even for experienced boaters.
Game with Braves today cancelled.
So horrible.
