My wife, The Deplorable
Vanity

Posted on 09/21/2016 6:34:58 AM PDT by Gamecock

She is a Christian. She is Pro-America. She is Pro-Life. She is Pro Law and Order.

And the best part, after a lot cajoling, last night she started the NRA Basic Pistol Course. When she left for the course she was a bit grumpy, not convinced why she needed the training. BUT when she returned home she was enthusiastically rattling off what she learned and even dropped the hint she would like a pistol for Christmas. And she hasn't even fired yet! That comes Saturday.

The course I recommended for her is hosted by the local Police Department, offered to women only at no cost. The lead instructor is a detective with 20 years on the force and the 2 co-instructors are women officers.

Sorry for the vanity, just needed to share!

Spend some $ renting several quality firearms.
It will save you $$$ in the end by getting something which fits her hand and shooting style.

Glock couldn’t print decent groups and trigger pull bugged me.
Sig didn’t feel right.
Kimber Gold Combat 1911 .45... SOLD!

Have her start looking at concealed carry purses. That will get her going even more.

I personally swear by the Gun Totin' Mamas' brand of purses. They get the little details right - good holster locations, lots of customizability, nice broad straps reinforced with piano wire so they can't be cut. Even if it's not her primary method of carry it makes a great backup for when you're wearing something not gun friendly.

Columbia, SC PD

I will say that this morning I asked her why she thinks a local PD would offer this course to women at no cost.

She thought about it for a few seconds, the light bulb went off and she rattled off a few good reasons:

1. They want women to be well trained.
2. They do agree with the rights to keep and bear arms.
3. They want women to be safe (see 1) and to be able to protect themselves.

I think thinking through that validated what she is doing.

I agree with Mrs. G.

I have been around firearms all my life. I was in the securty police in the military. And if I was to buy a handgun for at home, I would get a revolver.

I would not want my daughters to use a semi-auto. Heck I am afraid to use them. (Ok not afraid- but nervous enough to not hand a loaded one to anyone) I leave that to professionals who use them daily.

There is a video of a police officer TRAINER who has a semi, who thinks it is unleaded, even has his assistant come and look to make sure, and then he accidentally fires a round into the ground. (Thankfully he did the exact thing he was supposed to do, to clear a weapon- and the last step being test fire into a clearing barrel or the ground - as a last test to make sure it is unladd- it wasn’t)

Since I have not touched one for years, I feel 100% safe with a revolver, not so safe with a semi-auto. SAFE being the keyword, I want to maximize that.

I feel the same about my pump-action shotguns. I keep a stick in the chamber when it is unleaded so I know without having to look inside it, or pump it.

I even got a Rossi Circut Judge (an wonderful weapon - google it) because it is a revolver shotgun. And shoots either 410 shotgun OR .45 cal bullets.

As a woman who has shot both a revolver and a semi, perhaps I can shed some light.

When I first tried a semi-automatic, I had trouble with the slide. It seems that I was pulling the slide back, rather than pushing the body of the weapon forward while holding the slide in place.

A retired NYPD friend of mine showed me where I was doing it incorrectly for my own body-type. Perhaps, because women are built differently than men, the slide presents a problem that the right body-mechanics solves easily.

I have never had an issue since and now enjoy shooting a semi-automatic as well as a .38 revolver.

But I highly recommend the course! :-)

Congrats. It’s actually a great idea. My wife qualified in VA with a Walther PK380 but was having trouble loading the magazine. We got her a S&W 642 and she qualified in SC with it. She loves her little 642. But, the best part is she doesn’t complain when I buy a new gun. Just last week, I added a 45 to replace all of those that I lost in a terrible boating accident.

I recently fired a Ruger SP-101 revolver. It was pretty nice, but I wouldn’t recommend full-bore .357 loads. They are STOUT! My son’s Taurus lightweight in .38 Special is nice for the price. His semi-auto Ruger LC9s Pro is surprisingly shootable for a lightweight, concealable 9mm.

Rent various guns at a range and find something that fits.

Does she have a sister? :)

Seriously, the ladies often prefer revolvers because the amount of grip required to rack the slide on the typical semi-auto is not user friendly.

Revolvers are just pull the trigger and they work.

A couple of recommendations I’d make for nice, CCW revolvers are the Ruger LCR in .38 caliber, and the Smith and Wesson, I think it’s called Featherweight. Also, .38.

Both are five shot, snubby revolvers designed specifically for CCW purposes. The .38 is a nice, reasonably effective defense round that is inexpensive and (ahem) user friendly.

Anyway, best of luck to the both of you.

So glad to see a PD that believes in the RKBA! Congrats!
