It is not a suggestion that is likely to go down well with millions of cat lovers. An American academic has recommended that all stray felines should be eradicated unless they can be found a home, because of the huge numbers of birds they kill.
Not only that, but Dr Peter Marra, the director of the Smithsonian migratory bird centre in Washington, says all domestic cats should be kept indoors or on a lead to stop the devastating impact they have on wildlife.

In our area we have barn cats. They don’t live long due to coming into close proximity with the tires of moving cars.
Maybe we can find a way to deal with our surplus academics too.
Amen. All my cats have been former strays. I like them more than I like most people. How about we eradicate all extraneous academics? THAT is plan I could endorse.
Cats come and go around here all the time. In fact, I believe they “belong” to several families. They go from home to home just like deer.
The danger of too many cats are the potential diseases they can spread.
Birds don’t really serve any useful purpose anyways. and they’re always pooping on my vehicles so, I’m siding with the cats because at least they kill vermin.
Here’s what I wonder about this, and I’m too lazy to read the article, so apologies in advance if they answered it.
In 1492 this continent would have been teeming with foxes, weasels, minks, snakes, sparrowhawks, bobcats, and many other species of predator.
Today a long time can pass between sightings of a weasel in my suburb, excluding my next door neighbor.
Are not housecats filling an ecological niche that was vacated by the eradication of other predators? Was there really nothing eating the warblers in 1492? I don’t believe it.
Yes, cats do fill an important ecological niche. Those other animals that kill vermin won't come near humans. But cats love to be around humans and kill vermin. And then give them to humans so the humans won't starve. I even had a feral cat who would do that.
Why are bird lives more important?
Yes, since 13th century muslim terror is so popular and supported by this administration now, why not bring back the Plague?

In a lot of states, killing feral cats is legal. No license, no limit. Those things wreck HAVOC on the environment.
Giant pandas survive with great difficulty in the wild — let’s save them!
Cats survive easily in the wild — let’s kill them all!
I’m seeing a low-budget drive-in sci-fi movie where an army of feral cats descend upon a university campus where they attack the academics and scratch their eyes out.
It would be AWESOME!
They also wipe out native birds.
I like cats better than most people I meet...teachers, politicians, democrats, lawyers...ick.
Pardon my off topic rant, but cats are by no means close to a problem as deer are. I’m not sure of other regions of the country, but in the northeastern suburbs, they are a HUGE problem and hazard to motorists. I cannot begin to count the number of carcasses I find on the side of the road to and from work and other areas driving around. At night, when driving through wooded areas, they just dart right in front of the car.
I advocate deer season should be year long.
I despise movies, but I’d kick in ten bucks to see that one. ‘Look, kitty...a progressive!’
