It is not a suggestion that is likely to go down well with millions of cat lovers. An American academic has recommended that all stray felines should be eradicated unless they can be found a home, because of the huge numbers of birds they kill.
Not only that, but Dr Peter Marra, the director of the Smithsonian migratory bird centre in Washington, says all domestic cats should be kept indoors or on a lead to stop the devastating impact they have on wildlife.

“All my cats have been former strays.”
Ditto for our cats — all indoors and tamed.
Kinda like abortions, eh academics?
Perhaps we could just give them birth control. Let them die out on their own. We need to develop highly targeted birth control methods like that. Eradicate wild hogs as well.
Filthy hypocrite! and the “windmills” that chop birds into pieces? the solar farms that roast birds? you ignore that you fool?
Liberals are never consistent. They practice self-contradictory actions all the time. Their “minds” are a swirling mass of self-loathing non-sequiturs.
As my vet told me “outside cats live short violent lives!”
If you love your cat and want to keep it, get a littler box and keep it inside.
To each their own. We purchased an older home last year whose owners had a house cat. We experienced a leak in the basement a few, short months later. The water soaked the carpet in one of the bedrooms.
Guess what. We found out where the house cat peed. Wet carpet and cat urine is terrible. New carpet installation ensued shortly thereafter.
I have several barn cats at the research facility that I manage. I love them in that setting. My cats keep the rats and sparrows at bay. Overnight, a damn pack rat can chew the wiring in a tractor.... @ $1,000 in damage give or take.
Well cats have been around for a long time so you would think birds would be extinct by now. Don’t birds fly though?
“But cats love to be around humans and kill vermin. And then give them to humans so the humans won’t starve.”
Do you have any recipes for them vermins your cats give you?
This guy does not understand. Now that cats aren’t outside anymore there is an explosion of rabbits, chipmunks, mice, rats. And now we have coyotes, foxes, skunks, hawks filling the void. But we also have ticks and fleas. And of course Lyme disease.
First, they came for the cats.....next will be the dogs, since Muslims hate them. Insane!
> Dont birds fly though?<
Except those who nest on the ground. Feral cats kill for sport. They’ll wipe clutch of quail in a heartbeat. I support programs that sterilize feral cats.
Cats kill mice.
Feral cats kill birds and mice and squirrels because they need to eat.
A domesticated cat kills just for the fun of it...most of the time.
“Why are bird lives more important?”
Because....

“Bad Idea.
Less Cats -> More Rats -> More Diseases.
Isn’t this how the Black Plague started in the 1400’s?”
Cities are the perfect environment for vermin, feral cats keep them under control.
Too bad about the cat urine issues in the house. Unless a cat is ill or in end stages of life, the problem is with the owner(s) and not the cat. We have six indoor cats. They’re the proverbial “scaird-y cats” and go into hiding at the sound of a doorbell or a strange voice, so our friends and visitors almost never see them.
We’ve sold a few homes and potential buyers and buyers were shocked to learn later that we have “a” cat — much less six — because they never saw them. We’d put away toys and litter boxes before a showing. There is no smell. There were no cat “accidents”.
If the owner doesn’t maintain the boxES (always more than one) frequently and diligently there will be problems. Not the fault of the cats.
It makes me sad that people will dispose of pets for reasons like this, when the fault lies with the owners themselves. They’ll adopt a pet with no clue about care and behavior and just wing it. The pet ultimately pays the price.
I must clarify: not strays, found treasures. Their Majesties would be most perturbed to be labelled ‘strays’.
I like song birds too....they, whoever “they” are, estimate that every cat kills 50 birds every year...
I agree. I live in rural Michigan and out here there are 2 kinds of drivers: 1. Those who have hit a deer and, 2.Those who are going to.
