CARAPACE

A carapace is the hard covering of all or parts of the backs of certain animals, like the upper shell of a turtle or the armor on the dorsal pat of an armadillo.

It is also known in zoology as a "shield" or a "test," a word that has a special use in that field designating the protective shell or other hard covering of some invertebrates such as sea urchins and starfishes.
