Propelled by an increase in prescription narcotic overdoses, drug deaths now outnumber traffic fatalities in the United States, a Times analysis of government data has found.
Drugs exceeded motor vehicle accidents as a cause of death in 2009, killing at least 37,485 people nationwide, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
While most major causes of preventable death are declining, drugs are an exception. The death toll has doubled in the last decade, now claiming a life every 14 minutes. By contrast, traffic accidents have been dropping for decades because of huge investments in auto safety.

When I think about my former career... I can actually remember going to more people who died from drug overdoses than car accidents. I thought that it was more of a local phenomena. I worked in a drug and crime infested city. It is interesting to me that this is now a national trend. It indicates to me that the country is in a downward spiral.
The media/govt latest obsession. They are not interesting in helping people, that I am sure.
Well, it is probably improving our DNA
A few years ago, I was at the scene of a heroin overdose. The coroner came by after an extended period.
It was ten oclock in the morning. The one we were working on was her fourth since four oclock.
Amazing.
Cars are getting safer and drugs more powerful and varied so this isn’t a surprise. I mean when I was young meth wasn’t even around like it is today.
Now marijuana is cool, everyone does it. They have created a huge legal industry where they make powerful drug infused food products. The dope has been so refined and concentrated that it can, and has, killed people. Namely kids eating candy infused with this crap.
High school kids can now get massive highs at school by eating a brownie or other infused product. And there is no evidence or smell to give it away. Very sad.
When I was young PCP was big, and meth isn’t anywhere near as bad as that.
That is true but if you are a druggie are your choices today more or less than in years past? I only have a superficial awareness of the drug scene but I have read cannabis is more powerful today.

but now, look, drug deaths are higher than drunk driving victims....
the joint commission which is the impetus in changing the focus of health care, since they inspect and critique hospitals, many years ago instructed hospitals that they MUST treat pain and they must document pain control and pain relief.
you could not doubt anybody claiming they had pain...
drug seekers ALWAYS will state they still have pain...
just inject them with their favorite trio...dilaudid...Phenergan..and Benadryl, and inject it fast please...
they created a huge drug culture...
and now, now that drs and hospitals are pulling back a bit on prescribing these drugs, they seek illegal stuff...
What I have seen personally, is people having psychotic episodes while they are high on pot. And I am not talking someone who is a little disoriented... I am talking full on screaming, fighting, biting, kicking spitting, six people to hold down a 110 pound woman insane. Marijuana advocates will not admit that the psychotic episode was induced by pot, but it is happening more and more frequently, especially from marijuana that is eaten. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if some of them have killed themselves or others.
The heroin out there now is cheap, highly potent, and often laced with extremely dangerous chemicals. And it has spread to the upper middle class in epidemic proportions.
misery is high
