Microsoft owns the desktop. Android owns mobile. What those two have in common - they supported open hardware, made sure to support as wide a pool of hardware platforms as possible. Closed systems just don't stand the test of time.
This is competition on the basis of price point.
Interesting to know the case history of the failures and what held them back from competing. Except for Microsoft — they just love to fail.
I’ve driven one Ford or another since 1978 with satisfactory results. I’m sure I might like a Lexus, but my Ford works fine.
Likewise with my Android.
I just wonder what this recall of the Galaxy Note 7 will mean?
Gartner Group ?
I’m sure there are more Androids out there ... more than ever but Gartner will cash any check you hand them.
How many companies produce Android vs. only Apple for iOS?

Yup. Also, most people are more interested in the price tag than the label. e.g. Betamax v. VHS.
I love my windows phone, but the lack of phone choices is pretty much driving me to Android on my next phone.
4 years old and has worked flawlessly. Microsoft did an upstanding job on the OS.
Doesnt Android have a long history of security problems when compared with iOS security issues?
never even heard of symbian, what was that?

IOS just seems to be a more organized system to use. Android to me seems like its all over the place with certain items.
Just one mans opinion.
One phase of it is “over.” For now. There will be a new startup with an innovation that will start it all over again and change the colors on that chart yet again.

...It's just a fad.
Android took the lead, absolutely true. Android is made by Google, and is distributed FREE of charge to anyone who wants to build a phone. It is indeed Open Source. Google invests millions, if not hundreds of millions giving away a free OS. Why?
Here is a hint. If a company gives away a product or service; make no mistake - YOU are the product.
There is a reason why Apple goes out of their way to make the iPhone’s secure. There is no need for the NSA to even ask for the encryption on Android; as Google has made every email, every text and every phone call open to them.
Apple, then as now, has told the FBI to go pound sand. It’s the most secure consumer OS on the market.
Why don’t you post a chart of profitability of mobile platforms...?
Remember Beta Max? No. I remember VHS.
Ping.
