Woman arrested after feasting on big meal, then saying she has no money to pay
Bradenton Herald ^ | 8/30/2016 | Jessica De Leon

A Bradenton woman ordered and feasted on a steak dinner and chocolate cake, but when the bill came she refused to pay, stating she had no money, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Ana Bulovic, 28, decided to treat herself at Cody’s Roadhouse in Bradenton Monday afternoon, even though she knew she didn’t have any money to pay the bill, according to an arrest report.

The feast, which totaled $43.58, ended with her getting arrested and charged with petit theft. She is being held at the Manatee County jail on a $120 bond.

When Bulovic was presented her tab at about 4:30 p.m. Monday, staff at Cody’s told deputies she refused to pay, so the sheriff’s office was called, the report states. When a deputy arrived, the restaurant manager said they wanted to press charges if she did not pay for the meal.

The deputy approached Bulovic as she was eating her chocolate cake, he reported, and asked if she had any money for the food.

“Ana told me the bill was higher than she expected, and when I asked how much money she had, she informed me ‘zero,’” the deputy wrote in his arrest report.

The deputy asked why she had ordered the food if she knew she didn’t have any money, and Bulovic told him just to give her a fine and she would leave. But the deputy told her if she didn’t pay she was going to be arrested, to which she responded, “Let’s go.”

Buovic was taken to jail.

She had her cake and ate it too.

Actually, it would be a liability to the restaurant, should she cause any mayhem while in the kitchen.

The feast, which totaled $43.58...

Must not have included liquor. If you're going to do this then at least have a couple of drinks and a bottle of wine.

If you try this on your hotel bill it’s a Federal rap.

Second time in two days I have seen that. Legal term that means petty, and is part of Florida’s criminal code.

Perhaps she was looking for a way to get sent to jail without committing too serious a crime. They have free food there, too.

My grandfather owned a small store. There was *always* work, sweeping, stocking, painting, etc. He used to have people come in and offer to swing a mop, or whatever else needed to be done for a day or two.

The dumb ones asked for money. Smart ones took my grandmother's cooking. She'd stuff them, and send them on with enough leftovers to feed an army.

It was a different time.

Pretty run of the mill place. Nicer places get that much for a single steak, not a ‘feast’. Throw the book at her for not thinking higher class!

The word ‘petit’ is pronounced “petty” and so it is often written as petty theft.

Usually people wait until they are full then throw a massive chimpout and get the meal comped.

My grandfather was a pharmacist. Like most of them back at that time he owned his own drug store. The neighborhood at that time was filled with recent Italian immigrants who had very little money. Often they would barter with him. He would take a chicken or a basket of tomatoes in exchange for a prescription.

In some cases the customer could not even come up with that. My dad says he would give them the prescription anyway. Then he’d shrug and say “someone is sick and they need medicine....what am I supposed to do? Tell them no??”

From the comments:

So much for kindness. The restaurant manager couldnt cover the tab for her? The girl is probably homeless, etc. etc. No, I am not condoning but at least she didnt mug someone for money to go eat. This way, no one was hurt. Maybe he could have offered her a job.

If she’d showed up at a Chick-fil-a and told them she was hungry and penniless, she probably would have been fed for free.

My (local) pharmacist does the same thing, when occasion calls for it. Or, some people run a tab.

'Tis why I work with him. He gives solid commonsense advice as well, and is always on the lookout for drug interactions.

You don't get that kind of service at the Big Box Pharmacies.
