At least two prominent NFL reporters believe the San Francisco 49ers could pull a RG3 on quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who could be protected in 2016 so the 49ers can save millions against injuries guarantees next offseason.
Albert Breer of MMQB became the latest national reporter to weigh in on Kaepernick Thursday morning.
Colin Kaepernicks injury history, combined with the heavy injury guarantees in his contract, would be a motivator to put him on ice for the year if the team isnt sold hell rebound in Chip Kellys offense, Breer wrote. The Redskins pulled something similar last yearthey knew Robert Griffin III wasnt their guy, so they didnt risk putting him on the field and triggering his 2016 injury guarantee.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk openly wondered the same idea on Monday.
Absent a trade or a willingness to pay Kaepernick a lot of money to go away, the 49ers have the RGIII option at their disposal, Florio said. That would entail putting Kaepernick on the bench and keeping him in bubble wrap so that, come 2017, they wont be strapped with a fully-guaranteed $14.5 million obligation that cant be avoided before April 1 if hes injured, again.
Unless Chip Kelly fully believes in Kaepernick moving forward (and thats a debatable premise, given his current standing in a starting battle with Blaine Gabbert, of all quarterbacks), the 49ers could protect themselves by shelving the former second-round pick as a third-stringer and then cutting Kaepernick before his $14.5 million becomes fully guaranteed on April 1st of 2017. Of course, if hes injured at that time, the 49ers wont have the option.
The Redskins played the same card on RG3 last season. After he suffered a concussion during the preseason, Washington all but shut down his seasonstashing him behind Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy to protect him from another injury. His healthy season allowed the Redskins to part ways without the financial repercussions of his fifth-year, injury-guaranteed salary kicking in.
A tricky balancing act awaits the 49ers over the next few weeks. Kaepernick has been out while dealing with a dead arm issue, which has robbed Kelly and his staff of valuable time in the evaluation process. At some point soon, the 49ers will need to decide if Kaepernick is worth risking during the 2016 season. Then again, the franchise has 14,500,000 million reasons to stash him on the bench and set up a clean divorce next offseason.
Sounds like he’ll have plenty of time now to go to Mosques.
The racist white hating muslim?
I don’t think they want him even on the sideline. I wouldn’t either.
That explains a lot, especially this latest behavior.
Good..perhaps he can move to the Congo, see what oppression REALLY looks like..guess what Colin, your millions wont help you over there
I would play him, but have the linemen not protect him after the center gives him the ball.
The books the books, shouldn’t they all be Korans??????
Yep, that pic just screams, “Help! Help! I’m being repressed!”
Bye Bye Blackbird Joe Cocker Pack up all my cares and woes feeling low here I go Bye Bye blackbird Where somebody waits for me sugar sweet so is she Bye Bye Blackbird No one seems to love or understand me and all the hard luck stories they keep handing me where somebody shines the light I'll be coming on home tonight Bye Bye Blackbird Bye-Bye blackbird
Good idea.
It just MIGHT knock some sense into his BIG, FAT thick head.
Colin has all these expensive worldly possessions, yet he seems to feel inadequate, and like he doesn’t quite belong.
That feeling of inadequacy may explain the over-tattooed look he’s applied to his appearance. If he was ten years younger, and not rich, this man would be ripe for the local street gang, without regard to being bought up in a loving home.
Islam offers that same encapsulation of authority that he seems to need in his life.
If a boss tells you to stand for The National Anthem, that's what you do. I don't care what your job is....you know the expectations when you are hired. Part of that paycheck this creep is getting is to represent a sport that's uniquely American in a way that reflects its connection to US exceptionalism.
If they had any guts, the NFL would suspend him.
grrr....JMHO....I finally put words to the disgust I've felt about this!
