Frozen strawberries imported from Egypt and used by Tropical Smoothie Café locations in Virginia are possibly linked to a cluster of Hepatitis A infections, spurring state health officials to issue a public health warning.

The restaurant chain has already pulled the implicated strawberries from all of its restaurants, not just the 100 locations in Virginia, according to a company statement issued today.

“Individuals who consumed a smoothie from a Tropical Smoothie Café in Virginia that contained frozen strawberries on Aug. 5, 6, 7 or 8 may still benefit from vaccine or immune globulin to prevent Hepatitis A,” the Virginia Department of Health warning said.

You say there's a problem, huh.

I’ve read that most of our supermarkets carry fresh (? - ha!) garlic, from China. :(

Giorgio mushrooms briefly were sourced from China.

I never buy food from China. Or SE Asia. No country of origin - I pass. I cook at home a lot. Afraid of what they may serve, and who might be preparing it.

Yes, because our own bays and seashores produce no scallops, right? Must import from PHILIPPINES. Geez.

Exactly what I do.
If it doesn’t say where it’s from I don’t buy it.

Approximately 25 years ago there was a TV show about tomato growing in Mexico.

I have not bought a single tomato from Mexico since then.

Not one.

When eating out I avoid tomatoes.

Same here. Haven't been back to Whataburger in years after watching the cook dig deep down the backside of his pants for a nice long scratch with one hand as he was flipping burgers with the other. I was a secret shopper for Sonic until the day a car hop with black filth under her nails handed me the sack. Horrid black filth. How she got past the manager with such proves how filthy the whole place was.

From wiki on Hep A - "The time between infection and symptoms, in those who develop them, is between two and six weeks" Meaning the smoothies have been sold for 6 weeks or longer to untold numbers of people.

And "It is usually spread by eating or drinking food or water contaminated with infected feces" Yum, Egyptian poo. Remember several years ago on George Lopez' HBO special from San Antonio, TX and he thought is was oh so funny going on and on about illegal Mexican pickers wiping their butts with produce for gringos. He's been banned from tvs in this house since.

How is shipping garlic all the way from China profitable? Some government incentive?

I’m guessing my grandmother planted garlic around some trees in our yard many decades ago so I don’t have the need to buy it. It keeps coming back year after year with no care whatsoever.

If Americans wouldn’t waste so much food, we wouldn’t need to import it. Look at how many school lunches get trashed. Look at how much goes out from restaurants. Our grocery store used to set soon to expire items or old produce outside for anyone to take home for free so it wouldn’t be wasted. Of course, the government put a stop to that. After that, they’d still give the old bread to the nursing home which would set it out for anyone to get. Nope, can’t do that anymore, either. Walmart used to put their old baked goods on a clearance rack but they don’t do that anymore so guess all that goes to the garbage. And then there’s the household wasted food. It’s ridiculous. Might as well throw money out the window. Nothing is tossed here. It’s eaten or composted.

How about the new regs that say Country of Origin doesn’t have to be listed on BEEF, anymore?

It wasn't a great crop this year but I'll still share...

I did not know Hep could be spread that way,

That is Hepatitis A which transmits via the fecal-oral route. The people that handled the berries didn't wash their hands after going to the bathroom. Hep B is blood-borne as is Hep C. They are viruses and only related by being viruses and affecting the liver. The symptoms are jaundice and clay- colored stools. It is quite disconcerting when your poop is gray and your pee is brown.
