Thinking of retiring to western N.C. I'd love a log cabin in the mountains with modern amenities, but don't want to be too far from Dr's, grocery shopping, hospitals, etc., so a good mtn view would suffice. I've been looking north, west & east of Asheville and also in the Lenoir area and further south of Lenoir.
I'm watching the weather, and reading N.C newspapers and it seems like flooding can be a real problem.
Any suggestions/warnings from North Carolinians, especially regarding areas to avoid, would be helpful.
Thanks
You ever get over to Todd??? Visit the historic old General Store??? it was a great place to browse and eat lunch...
Shame they closed this year....
Thanks. I appreciate that.
Nikki Haley and Linda Graham???
I don’t think so.....
I was thinking more about taxes, and how purple NC has become.
Graham and Haley will be gone soon enough.
Can't say that I did. Will keep it in mind, next time I visit mom.
Thanks. I’ll check out the Cashiers/Brevard area some more.
Take a look at Dahlonega and Helen Georgia. Murphy NC is a great town but it took FBI over a year to find Eric Rudolph living in a dumpster behind safeway.
The old store has now closed...In my opinion, the store and fishing the New River was about the only draws to Todd...:o))
I do have to say that gas taxes are much, much, much better in SC.....
If you want peace and quiet, but beautiful scenery and great mountain places to visit, check out Townsend, TN...It is 40 minutes from Knoxville, 20 minutes from Maryville...
Historic Cades Cove is short drive away...(Townsend sits on the border of the Great Smoky Mtns Nat’l Park and is the town where I was born and raised)
Ditto that for Black Mountain. Also look at Hendersonville and Tryon areas. Another area is Rutherfordton. It is in the foothills but is a great community.

“Asheville ultra lib and huge collection of butches but offers a lot”
A lot of traffic. It’s become more yuppiefied recently. I was there last year and didn’t see as much of the hippy stuff. I guess it got too expensive.
Johnson City TN is basically Boone west and TN doesn’t have state income tax. Banner Elk is nice.
Mission Hospital in Asheville is top notch and they have satellite/affiliated hospitals through out the region.
“There is a bunch going on in Boone. Western Carolina University is there”
I hate you
You might want to look over the mountains in the East Tennessee/Southwest Virginia area. While Johnson City itself is in a bowl and gets hot in the summer, and Kingsport is an industrial zone, areas near there are cooler and nicer.
Decent medical care there, with a med school and a VA hospital in Johnson City.
Rudolph was living in a camp in the woods overlooking the FBI facility that had been created to look for him. He was caught while dumpster diving.
