Whirlpool Put Laundry Machines In Some Schools And Increased Attendance By 90%

Last year the good people at Whirlpool created the Whirlpool Care Counts Program and donated seventeen pairs of washers and dryers to school districts in St. Louis and in Fairfield, California. The schools then invited kids with attendance problems to bring in their laundry to be cleaned while they were in class.

The results were astounding: over 90% of participating students increased their attendance that year, at-risk students attended almost two more weeks of school, and each student got approximately 50 loads of laundry done at school.

Funny, we drone on and on about the virtues of charity, then piss all over it when it actually happens.

I may just start responding on threads with a haiku -

We'll pay for the soap
And the labor to clean clothes
So what will they learn?

There was a story a few years ago about how laundry detergent is a frequent shoplifting target.

That's true, and the favored item is Tide.

Good clothes washing skills can prevent pink underwear. Which is a sure sign of communist tendencies, as Richard Nixon understood.

To the reporter, who must have flunked out of school, it means the same as 90% of participants increased attendance. Of course they did. One load of laundry would have accomplished that, all other things being equal.

How far are we now from the schools being actual homes for these (unwanted) kids? They are eating two meals a day there and now getting their laundry there. In many instances, they are getting their supplies donated to them via charities and donations.

I am thinking, it's getting pretty close to adding dormitories, beds and calling it done.

And many of the "parents" (read: mothers) would be thrilled to be rid of the trouble. They could go back to posting selfies, taking drugs and hooking up with different men.

Maybe if we sent maids to clean their rooms while they were in class or to make them gourmet meals attendance would increase!

Charity would be Whirlpool donating the machines, and the kids doing their own laundry.

The article said their laundry is done for them while they are in class. One wonders whether it is folded neatly for them as well.

The article seems to be saying the laundry is done for the students ... not that they are learning to do laundry themselves

Parents won’t be raising kids, gov will.

When kids are laundering their clothes at school, it's a safe bet the adults in their lives had long ago abdicated their parental responsibilities.

And as usual, the spectacularly loser parents are not brought upon negligence charges.

I understand what you are saying.

However there are a number of kids in terrible situations who need to be removed from those situations.

We are supporting the irresponsibility of the parents by feeding them and cleaning their clothes.

These kids need to be removed. We need to re-think the ideas of orphanages and training schools to help socialize and care for these children. And stop enabling their parents.

Conservatives should promote the concept of “pride in oneself” even if they are poor. Clean clothes can be a symbol of SELF-RESPECT and self-responsibility, things that are often not being successfully taught in our schools like they used to be.

The same goes for providing notebooks, pens and pencils, paper and the other implements of education. Give/donate it to the kids, tell them that it is theirs to use in school, and that they are responsible for using it for their education, not games.

Again, match up the gift with responsibility and respect. Not much else seems to be working except uniforms in some schools to create an equality of dress and respect.
