Today’s men are not nearly as strong as their dads were, researchers say

A man’s hands say a lot about him. My own father, at 66, still has the calloused, gnarled hands of a guy who did competitive weightlifting in college and spent much of his career grappling with 1,500-pound dairy cattle as a large animal veterinarian. I, on the other hand, have the soft palms of a modern-day desk jockey. My hands are delicate, well-moisturized, and prone to blisters if I spend too much time in the garden.

And I’m not the only one. A new study in press at the Journal of Hand Therapy (yes, a real thing) finds that millennial men may have significantly weaker hands and arms than men the same age did 30 years ago.

Researchers measured the grip strength (how strongly you can squeeze something) and pinch strength (how strongly you can pinch something between two fingers) of 237 healthy full-time students aged 20 to 34 at universities in North Carolina. And especially among males, the reduction in strength compared to 30 years ago was striking. …

My dad, having been a ‘contractor’ could have kicked my ass easily.

But I hit the gym 6 days a week and can lift a hell of a lot of kettle bells or olympic weights for a 55 year old guy who can also run 10 miles.

Kids aren’t as active outdoors as they used to be.

I walked to school beginning in kindergarten, and so did all my classmates. After school and on weekends, I would ride my bike around the neighborhood and soon came to know every alleyway. And all of the neighbors’ kids did so, as well.

Nowadays, if you drive past an elementary school in the morning, you’ll be stuck in a traffic jam caused by parents dropping their kids off. And a child who dares to walk to school on his own runs the risk of getting in trouble with Child Protective Services. The same is true for any kid who strays from his front porch without an adult super4vising.

And so we scratch our heads and wonder why childhood obesity has become such a problem and why kids are growing up to be wimps.

Today's so called "men" are barely stronger than women.

Where the hell are their fathers?

Pussies all.

Researchers measured the grip strength...

I heard a comedian point this out inm his routine. He wondered if someone could come up with some sort of freee tool that Millenial men could work with, alone in their off time, that would could increase grip and forearm strength.

I don't even want to know a guy who uses moisturizer on his hands - unless he's got serious eczema.

Interesting observation - I, too, have noticed young men’s voices are higher than they were years ago. Not all, mind you. I’m vacationing in Maine and you don’t want to mess with the young toughs who fish lobster for a living.

I also notice city men speak in a kind of Valley Girl accent with the final word of a sentence going upwards in a question-like way. Weird and scary.

I’m 62 also. I had to load boxes of ceramic floor tile into a pickup awhile back. Grabbed one of the young guys where I work to help. Hes as big as a lineman. He could barely get them up to the tailgate.I could hold one at arms lenght.

As long as it’s foul, I can still hit it out of the field, whereas my high-schoolers could do it dead center. A pair of batting gloves helps.

I know plenty of guys who lift weights that are very strong

Not the same thing. My brother was a weight lifter and body builder and could not move a refrigerator for mom to sweep behind. He had no knowledge of how to use his weight and strength to get things done.

Just because someone is strong does not mean they can grip with their hands or lift something that requires more balance than lifting a barbell.

That’s pretty funny. I will say that when getting concrete at lowes, I did have a “truly strong” young guy help me. I felt like a woman watching a man throw boulders.

But I did have to pour my own concrete pads by grabbing, lifting and mixing 110 80lb bags.

This is a powerful image. American men decades ago who fought and won World War II, vs. the metrosexual pajama boy.

I hope and pray we never see World War III for many reasons. But among those reasons, are the thought of a generation of pajama boys being in our military to fight such a war.

Well I do lift and I do know how to move things using common sense ...i.e. using fulcrums, positioning, using your body efficiently, etc... But I guess I’m from the older generation so it’s just common knowledge...

I have 3 millennial aged kids. A daughter and 2 sons.

They recognize that many of their peers are poorly developed overall. Physically, emotionally, and mentally.

The plus side is that it’s a paradise for them.

My boys seem to have the pick of the girls, who appreciate men who act like men.

And my daughter is great at sniffing out the weak guys. They don’t stand a chance of getting close to her, or into her life.

The thought occurred to me, is this due to the fact we haven’t had a major war for a relatively long period of time? And I’m talking about a full-mobilization war, like WWII, and not necessarily Vietnam or the Gulf Wars.

In the absence of wars, it’s a natural tendency for people to ‘go soft’. It happened to the Romans, when they could simply get foreigners to do their fighting for them.

Also technology has gotten rid of a lot of the manual labor that used to be done. And who does a good portion of the manual work now? Immigrants (Legal and Illegal), the rest of us, type on a keyboard all day.

I started doing ‘man stuff’ at 12, seeing that it was Mom and I. Prepped me for all the things I learned to do to acquire various skills that I’ve used these last 50 years. And I know lots of GUYS who couldn’t so much as replace the power cord on a desk lamp, let alone overhaul a TurboHydramatic 400 automatic transmission. SMH, har!

“I can prove the feminization of millennial men with two worlds: “skinny jeans”.”

HEY! WE had PEGGED pants already, back in the 1950s!!! They didn’t invent this.

The good news is that tight pants raises the sperm’s temperature, rendering them useless. Maybe these idiots won’t be able to breed.
