UK musician Eric Clapton has been enjoying the salmon rivers in Iceland and yesterday he managed to set the record for hauling the biggest salmon of the summer in the Vatnsdalsá river so far, guide Sturla Birgisson informed Morgunblaðið. Clapton had to run a good kilometre down river with the salmon before he was finally able to draw it ashore, the salmon was hooked and after an exciting hunt came ashore just over an half hour later, measuring 108 cm and weighing 28 pounds, making it the biggest to come ashore from Vatsdalsá river this summer.
Vatnsdalsá river is one of the most well known salmon rivers in Iceland, famed for the size of its salmon. Anglers begun fly-fishing in Vatnsdalsá River in 1936, the first year people were able to practice ‘lease’ fishery in the river. Up until then people could only fish in the river using a net. The Fishing Association of Vatnsdalsá river was established parallel to the new fishing privileges. In 1997, Vatnsdalsá River implemented a strict ‘catch and release’ policy for all the salmon-beats, and only flyfishing is allowed. Image is taken from Vatsdalsá river website.

Well, it is all catch and release. Although I imagine the tree huggers and goat humpers are worried the fish will “suffocate” being out of the water like that.
Of course the half-hour battle probably did more damage to the fish than the two or three minutes it took to weigh, measure and photograph. Shoulda’ used 30 lb test and a Rapala!
Clapton has enjoyed fishing for a long time. He gave Howlin’ Wolf a fishing rod when they recorded the London Sessions.
A slightly larger fish will be caught by native Jimi Hendrickson who will then set it on fire.
He should going after a Kenai King in Alaska, 28 pounds is small there.
I thought there weren’t any wild salmon in the Atlantic?
Now, why would they use metric for length and lbs for weight?

That reminds me of an excellent fishing trip I went on in 1981. My brother lived in Juneau Alaska and he flew me up there to fish for trout on Hasselborg lake located on Admiralty island in the Tongass National Forest in the Gulf of Alaska. We met my dad and a couple who were friends to fly by float plane to Camp Sha-heen on the island.The trout in the lake were Dolly Varden, Cutthroat, and rainbow trout. We took firearms, as Admiralty island has a very large population of Grizzly Bears on it. The cabin cost $5.00 a day and was equipped with two small ten foot aluminum boats.We had to bring our own outboard engines, fuel, food, beer, and gear. We went in early July, so the sun didn’t set till about 4:00 AM. we caught our limit for lunch using spin-casting rods and home-made lures.I took 5 cases of Stroh’s beer from Detroit in a duffel bag along with a Model 19 Smith & Wesson revolver, and a Charter Arms AR-7 Explorer .22 survival rifle that the components store in a water-tight floating stock. I met Red Skelton on the short hop from Detroit to Milwaukee to connect to my flight to seatac. Definitely a memorable, perfect trip.
