Seattle is apparently breaking new ground by requiring landlords in the city to rent their housing units to qualified applicants on a first-come, first-served basis.
Officials say theyre unaware of any other U.S. city with a policy like the one the Seattle City Council approved Monday, along with other rental-housing changes.
The goal is to ensure prospective renters are treated equally, according to Councilmember Lisa Herbold, who championed the policy. When landlords pick one renter among multiple qualified applicants, their own biases conscious or unconscious may come into play, she says.
Some landlords dont mind the policy, saying they already operate on a first-come, first-served basis. But others are upset, saying they should be able to use their own judgment to choose the renters they believe will be most reliable.

I dont see a strong connection between first come, first serve, and equal treatment.
Insights welcome.
Yeah, right, like that's gonna happen.
“Before accepting a prospective renters application materials, a landlord will need to provide the renter with information on the landlords minimum screening criteria, Kranzler said.”
In NYC, an income of 40 times the monthly rent is often required. For a $2000 a month apartment, that would be $80K.
No drugs, no criminal background, no bad credit.
Okay, now you are already being racist and sexist, and "ableist."
Double Plus thought crime from you.
“but she can ask SOCR to investigate by checking the landlords records.”
I lived in a certain Hollywood apt bldg and still close to the bldg mgr. She keeps the “applicants forms/records’ in a stack obviously NOT IN ORDER/SEQUENCE. Unless the applicant records the time and conversation (which is illegal in CA) It’s hit and miss and there is no damn way to accept this. Its bad enough she gets applicants who have good credit and pass the background check but during their stay, they turn into something worse not on the previous checks.
Add NICS to the background check. But, make them wait at least 30 days. If they can’t legally own a firearm then they get dropped due to not meeting the qualifications. Seems only fair.
I’ve been saying this for years. When government gets between business and customer or business and employee, it is fascism of one level of severity or another.
The minimum wage is textbook fascism.
Actually, everyone DOES have biases. It's called human nature.
The people who want to control other people's biases have biases also. It's just that they think their biases should have preference, and should be enforced at the point of a gun under law.
More and more people are beginning to understand that the US has become, regarding freedom and commerce, a fascist nation. It’s obvious all around us.
This will lead to “hot bunking”. Many people living in a one small apartment. Some of the tenants work night jobs. Some of them work day jobs. Some of them sleep in the bedroom. Some of them sleep in the living room or in the garage. We have a lot of that here in California with illegals.
You crap?
You pay!
I remember years ago going through the arduous task of finding a decent place to rent. My task was complicated by the fact that I was a single parent.
I actually had two landlords deny me based solely on the fact that he was uncomfortable with the idea of me - a single man - having a child living with me.
I just shrugged and kept on looking until I found what I needed.
This just creates a backlash against “minorities” as people subconsciously want to distance themselves from such nonsense.
Hire a “protected” liberal person? Nah. Pass. That just brings problems.
Contract with a “minority owned” business? Nah. Pass. That just brings problems.
Rent to a “protected” liberal? Nah. Pass. That just brings problems.
“No drugs, no criminal background, no bad credit.”
It’s NOT enough. I resided in 2 Hollywood apts and the jerks still pass through the cracks. My landlord even once got a meth dealer who passed both checks. It was Breaking Bad in Hollywood. I also had a hot Russian neighbor who passed both checks but was the GF of a Russian mob boss in L.A. The Feebee in full black suits raided the apt while I was having coffee one early morning..
“In NYC, an income of 40 times the monthly rent is often required. For a $2000 a month apartment, that would be $80K.”
Just curious. if the income is low do they look at assets, such as savings? As a senior that would be my situation——low income but some assets.
.
Yep. If you have more than five acres you need a permit in King county to clear your blackberries.
Make the criteria too high for anyone to satisfy then settle on the best choice. ;-)
“Thats why Smith, the national expert, says Seattle will need to ramp up its sting operations.
According to SOCR, it will need to add two staffers to handle work related to the first-come, first-served policy to the tune of more than $200,000 next year.”
Creating government jobs out of thin air
Well, good luck with that.
They didn’t put it in the law. And they won’t.
Look, they’re commies. They don’t think like you and me.
We never would have made or passed such a horrible law, but the Left think that human nature can be legislated. We know it cannot be.
The outcome of this is many who own rentals selling them, and over the years, less and less rentals available in the city at higher and higher prices. Low income people who are usually minorities get screwed the hardest, due to a law some white pajama boy or Wonder Woman social justice warrior thought would help them.
Iconic and ironic!
To go along with Seattle's "Put your recycling in the PROPER container or we'll fine your ass " Police.
