Gabby Douglas may have just helped her team win gold at the Olympics but that hasn't stopped some fans criticizing her for not putting her hand on her heart during the U.S. national anthem.
The American gymnast was the only member of her squad who was photographed with her hands by her sides as The Star-Spangled Banner played in Rio on Tuesday.
The Olympic veteran took gold alongside Madison Kocian, Laurie Hernandez, Simone Biles and Aly Raisman in the Women's Team All-Around gymnastics ompetition.
Twitter user Angela complained: 'There is no excuse as to why you could not salute the flag of the country that gave you the opportunity to compete.'
'Gabby Douglas just standing there and not placing her hand over her heart while our anthem played was UN-Olympic,' Dawn Wisdom wrote.
'As a military kid Gabby Douglas knows the proper way to respect the anthem,' another social media user said.
And Brittany Hargrave added: 'On the one hand, so proud of the Final Five gold win. On the other, so disappointed Gabby Douglas didn't salute the flag.'
Douglas explained why she didn't raise her hand to her heart during the national anthem after spotting the complaints on social media.
'First I want to say thank you everyone for all your support! It's a huge honor for me to be able to represent Team USA,' she said.
'In response to a few tweets I saw tonight, I always stand at attention out of respect for our country whenever the national anthem is played.
'I never meant any disrespect and apologize if I offended anyone. I'm so overwhelmed at what our team accomplished today and overjoyed that we were able to bring home another gold for our country.'

In your post to Simpson96, you included the VERY SAME link to the NYDailyNews that I was harping on Leaning Right about. FR_Addict then likewise repeated this very same link to the NYDailyNews in post #53.
So why did you link to the NYDailyNews?
The URL identifies it as "gossip" coming from a liberal rag? The word "gossip" is in the very URL tag. And Leaning Right says he "stands by" this admitted "gossip" from a liberal rag, & decided to spread the gossip further!!!
Her hand was over her heart in 2012.

You will note that I mever mentioned religion and only addressed what it looked like she was doing based upon a photograph.
So I have ZERO IDEA why you have lost your ever loving mind and sent attack messages to me via freerepublic threads.
But I can make educated guesses as to why you did this...because you read a book ALLEGEDELY written by a semi famous gymnast where claims are made that she is very religious and a believer in Christ.
I make no accusations related to her being or not being a believer in Christ. I also do not assume..... just because a book was written and the printed her name on the front cover and called her the author....and that she sometimes even carries “two bibles” with her when she travels.....that she somehow is above public scrutiny for her public behavior while representing my country...aka rep’n ME.
You on the other hand assum becaise she allegedly carries 2 bibles with her when she hits the road that she cannot lossibly be an American hating leftist. I would point you towards the Very Reverend Jeremiah Wright who I assume owns more than one bible and quite possibly totes 2 or more around with him when he goes on one of his “God Da$@ Amerikkka” road trips.
Again...I don’t really know what was up with her fist being by her side but I can surmise different possibilities.
So I would ask you kindly to first of all take your pious Bible thumping know-it-all accusations and stick them in your ear.

When you repeat "gossip" from a questionable source, guess what that makes you? (A gossiper)

And what I noticed MOST about the bulk of the comments on this thread is that a few dozen freepers decided to judge Gabby Douglas & frame her entire life "narrative" based upon the (lack of) elevation of her arm, the clenchedness of her fist, her facial expression, & the color of her skin.
Some FREEPERs I pinged only commented on the arm; some only on the fist; a few commented on her facial expression; & several linked her with other blacks based upon her skin color alone.
But what they ALL had in common was judgmentalism on some subjective interpretation of something external about Gabby. It's 1 Samuel 16:7 embodied: People who chose to judge Gabby Douglas from the outside...but NOT the inside.
When I see a "pile on" effect, I will when I can stand against it. (There's WAY too much of it culture-wide to ever begin to go on a "crusade" about it.)
But, bottom line, I don't need to "buddy up" with everybody to "win influence" when by buddying up with them converts me into an open participant with their public sins.
I suggest it'd be better for ALL of us to start drawing some public lines in the sand...Democrats/liberals, the mainstream media, Islamic terrorists, political correctness, etc.

Perhaps unlikeable because they always throw their “blackness” around against everyone. In other words, their racism comes out loud and clear.
I don't know what's in Douglas's heart. Who knows...maybe she was goaded into smearing her former gym by people who have some sort of agenda, people who want to divide us instead of unite us.
Nevertheless, her comments have damaged a lot of people. It's something I have seen many times in my own profession (teacher).
