Who do you think is historically our greatest actor and comedian?
Sam Kinison
I’m a big Grant fan. (Arsenic and Old Lace!)
But Martin would get my vote. Got to see him on stage when I was in college. He was a hoot. And he shows up occasionally at festivals in the area where my mom lives (Ashville) to entertain and play his banjo. They love him.
He was great. I once had a beer with him while sitting at a bar at Snowmass in Aspen. He was exactly the same in person as he was on screen.
So was Chaplin, though he lived here long enough.
You beat me to it :-) William Powell was urbane, but Myrna Loy is probably the most underrated comedienne in movies.
Come to think of it, Carole Lombard comes close, but her untimely death kept her from creating a large enough collection of work.
Laurel and Hardy...
Peter Sellers...Pink Panther series
I would not put him among the great comedians but for a serious actor, Leslie Nielsen had a remarkable comedic career in his last years.
I think the first movie I saw him in was, “Forbidden Planet”.
Yes that is the name. . You can always tell when he is on SNL. I watch it then. You can tell which skits he writes.
I met Red Skelton on a plane in July of 1980 on my way to Juneau Alaska one day. I’m 6’3”, and he saw me and quipped “Look at this guy, He’s big enough to be his own state!”
Children! I love them. Baked with gravy and mashed potatoes.
Go away kid, you bother me.
Prestidigitation!
Only Mae West could match him with short, one liners that left you laughing in the aisles.
“Is that a pistol in your pocket or are you just glad to see me”? to Cary Grant.
Groucho Marx!!! Yes love those movies.
Jack Benny
Don’t like the unclean stuff, but Robin Williams was hilarious and no slouch in the acting department.
I don’t know who is/was the greatest, but John Ritter was one of the most underrated.
He seems like such a nice man.
Rodney Dangerfield and Redd Foxx.
Two funny ones!
Agreed! I’d forgotten about him. He died far too young.
One of my favs...
good comedy team. The thin man
He’s walking around the patio with a cocktail She says ‘dahling I would ask you to help me set up this lawn chair, but you might get all sweaty and die’
They’re introducing their baby to the socialite who says he’s adorable. Myrna Loy says “oh we just adore him ‘ Powell says, smiling, ‘we may as well, we’re stuck with him’
