Freeper help requested - opossum in the walls
8/07/2016 | papineau

I've got an opossum who's hanging out in my ducts and walls. I was thinking of getting a trap and catching him (or her, I don't want little possums to raise!) and letting him out in a field far away from me.

Anyone have any experience with possums in the house?

Out here, the game wardens encourage relocating wildlife that is annoying-they will even show you how to use a live trap, and tell you what areas to release which species into-that isn’t done where you are?

Great thread. Mammal belongs universally to Possum, because Marsupalia belongs universally to Possum and Mammal belongs universally to Marsupalia.

There are eight thousand species of mammals and a hundred varieties of marsupials. If you taped a pouch to a dog, it would not be a marsupial. And if you placed a possum in a bucket of water, it would not be just a plant.

How to catch an individual marsupial mammal? Got me. No clue.

I have heard that it has been done, with disastrous results, particularly with raccoons. And rodents carry several diseases (like plague, tularemia, hantavirus) and are carefully put down and disposed of.

I got rid of 75 squirrels to get the population under control. I couldn’t get any ripe fruit or vegetables from my trees and crops.

The first few were given a fun joy ride about 5 miles up in the hills and released. It was costing me about $3 in gas at the time to take them to their new home in the woods. After wasting $10 or $15 in gasoline and my time, I decided a huge bucket of water worked just fine.

Apparently that isn’t a concern any more out here-with rodent or other species-the wardens try to keep a healthy balance of prey animals and predators-mountain lion, coyote and wild hogs-we have strict leash laws with astronomical fines-because loose dogs run livestock, can form feral packs dangerous to humans and animals, etc-at the very least, they become fast food for mountain lions and coyotes-the idea is to keep those predators in the woods, eating their natural prey rather than attracting them with outdoor pets to pasture and garden where they might prey on livestock-so you don’t put out pet food-that attracts prey animals-and that-along with pets-attracts predators to come inside your fences.

As long as the predators have prey in the woods, they stay there and keep the proper natural balance, keeping deer herds from overpopulating, etc if not tempted by outdoor pets-it is a system that seems to work-there hasn’t been a rodent-borne disease problem since this wildlife program was started-more than 20 years...

I think they’re cute, too, but I’d rather not have them around. We were feeding some feral kittens on our screen porch for a few weeks. Some mornings when I got up there’d be a possum or raccoon eating the food.

The possums weren’t a problem, but the raccoons were threatening to the kittens. We brought in the kittens and the food, and all other critters disappeared.

I prefer the Joe Biden method. Point your shotgun where you think he is (number 4 Buck is preferred) and let loose with both barrels. It’s the government approved method.

I don’t have a problem with squirrels eating my veggies-but this is a rural area, so the squirrels have plenty to eat in the woods and from livestock feeders-as well as predators to keep down their population naturally-dogs discourage them from coming into gardens, too.

As a born-and-raised country person-we were taught not to kill anything unless we intended to eat it, or it was about to do harm to us, the pets or livestock-and I don’t kill animals any way but with a gun-it is quick and does not cause suffering-I have used a hoe or shovel to kill a rattlesnake-I happen to like those marinated in a nice sauce, cooked on the grill...

Some people eat squirrels here in the winter, even now-I don’t care for the taste myself...

My brother had the same problem. He set up a baited spin wheel over a 5 gallon pail. On the plates of the wheel he glued some nuts. Put the pail in his backyard next to a tree. The squirrel would climb down the tree, get on the edge of the bucket and when it stepped onto the spin wheel, it would fall into a foot and a half of water. Two weeks later there was only four squirrels around and they wouldn’t even get close to the bucket.

Good for you, MM. I have taken in feral cats for years and they turn out to quite the little ladies and gentlemen with a little bit of love.

There is one snoring in my bed at the moment awaiting me...to join the chorus.
