Freeper help requested - opossum in the walls
8/07/2016 | papineau

I've got an opossum who's hanging out in my ducts and walls. I was thinking of getting a trap and catching him (or her, I don't want little possums to raise!) and letting him out in a field far away from me.

Anyone have any experience with possums in the house?

I love possums. A baby came into the house and ended up in the bathroom. Caught him in a towel and put him out.

He still comes up for a little left over cat food.

He has grown up in the back yard and the woods out back.

Healthier food in the wood than in the cat dish.

Bless both of you-most people don’t know that feral cats can become the best pets ever-one of my kitties-all shelter cats-was found in the woods and brought to the shelter-she was at least 2 years old, but very small and very skittish and wild. Since I’d fostered cats before for them, the shelter manager asked me to foster because of my 2 laid back cats and my cat-loving Husky-all were hoping that after she calmed down a bit she could get a home with a quiet single person who didn’t have a lot of animals or commotion going on. A couple of weeks after I got her, she started playing with my two cats and my Husky, coming to meet me at the door with all three of them after work when they heard my truck drive up to the gate-and she started sleeping on the bed at night with me-and them.

Done deal-I paid the adoption fee myself and kept her-now Midget girl is a lap cat and despite being small-6 lbs, she is a very good mouser-she is still a fraidy cat with loud noises, but after spending her first couple of years in the woods, I can see why...

We’ve had an unknown critter in an exterior wall. It would awaken us at night scratching from the inside. We placed moth balls in the crawl space opening below and they seemed to do the job. No scratching heard sense that time.

Life in the country is not always peaceful bliss at times.

When we trapped the three babies, had them “fixed”, got their shots, etc., a lady who works with feral cats told us, “You’ll never tame those kittens.” Well, they turned out to be the sweetest, most loving, clingy lap cats we’ve ever had. (One became very ill with seizures — the sweetest of them all — and he’s waiting for us at Rainbow Bridge. It’s been three years, and I still cry for him.)

A year later, we brought in their mother who still is quite wild. She’s very sweet, “talks” up a storm, and loves to be petted — with one hand only. If she sees that other hand make an appearance, she’s gone.

We had two rescues before these. Now we have six indoor-only cats, and they all get along.

They do have a way of becoming a big part of your life-I lost my much-loved Siberian Husky late this past winter-she was 17-she left peacefully in her sleep-I might never have another dog-she was that special...

My old Maine Coon died in his sleep less than a month ago-he was at least 19-I got him from the shelter 12 years ago, and he was at least 7, the vet said-Titus and Midget still look around the house for him-I’ll let another shelter cat pick me as their human soon-but not just yet-my pets stay indoors-cats all the time, and my Husky never went out without me-and on a long leash after dusk way out here, there are too many predators to let a domestic pet roam outdoors-they are fast food for coyotes and mountain lions.

I miss both my old babies so very much-it was hard to lose them both in just a few months, even though they were both so very old...

Hi, one county over from you. I shoot them. They are a vector for Chagas Disease. For a pet dog who contracts it, there is no cure. Doggy Death Sentence. I know Chagas is becoming more common here, but since it’s a third world disease, lots of times it gets diagnosed as congestive heart failure.

*** Out here, the game wardens encourage relocating wildlife that is annoying-they will even show you how to use a live trap, and tell you what areas to release which species into-that isn’t done where you are? ***

In Kerr County, our game warden says shoot them with a .22.

Regarding what to do about it, maybe you could point a couple speakers at your wall, and play these recordings very loudly:

Hillary Laughing

Hillary Barking

We have relatively few coons and possums here-the human population density is very low, and apparently they don’t multiply as much where that is so-I know there is more of a problem in Kerr county-you have more people and an actual city there-more outdoor food and temptation for varmints, I suppose. There are more people in the Kerr county seat than there are in this whole county, but I’d live there if I didn’t like it here so much...

I don’t know if there are enough predators to keep down the population of varmints where you are-but we are good here-I see the tracks of predators almost every time I go into the woods by the river-and I’ve gone for as long as 2 weeks without seeing any prey animals other than deer, birds and squirrels.

The owner of the company I worked for in the 90’s had done a lot of research on Chagas because it was already becoming more common-he was from NM, and it was already starting to be a problem there-he was convinced it was brought by mostly illegal immigrants, but I’ve no idea if he was right or if it was spreading via stuff brought in by truck from S America...

I haven’t been out in your direction in a few weeks-the river is still full here, which is great-how is it over your way?

I had a possum living in my bathroom for a while.

I hope you're not admitting that on first dates......

As funny as some of these suggestions are... get a professional.

It makes it much easier when you have to file a claim with your insurance company for opossum damage.

River here is still looking good, creeks, too.
Kid bought 300+ acres on Red Bluff Creek about 6 mos ago.
The rains over there washed their bridge out that crosses the creek,.
Oh, well, I guess all the rain was good for Medina Lake.
My kid was excited the slabs from the washed out bridge made a waterfall. She likes Bandera/Pipe Creek.

Red Bluff Creek is near me-that bridge washes out almost every time it floods-sometimes the one on FM 1283 does, too. I lived near the lake until a couple of years ago-anytime the lake is up, the noise and crowds are enough to make you think you’re in the middle of an f’ing waterpark with boats. I much prefer the quiet here-more like how it is where I’m from in remote SW Texas..

LOL... one of my students found a baby possum, so I took it home and raised it till it was old enough to set loose in the wild. It really was cool.
