('A war of religions': Fury in France over how known jihadists on terror watchlist were allowed to murder priest as Sarkozy calls for 'a merciless response)
Fury has erupted in France as the nation's current and former leaders call for a 'merciless' response to an attack that left an 84-year-old priest dead and a nun critically injured.
Two knifemen burst into a Normandy church this morning before filming themselves butchering elderly priest, Jacques Hamel, and performing a 'sermon in Arabic' at the altar, according to a witness.
French president Francois Hollande said the country is now 'at war' with ISIS after the terror group claimed responsibility for the attack at Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray near Rouen.
Meanwhile 'horrified' ex-Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin said he feared 'everything is being done to trigger a war of religions'.
Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy called for a 'merciless' response to the killing.
It comes after it was revealed that one of the killers, 19-year-old Adel K., was being monitored by electronic tag after twice attempting to join fanatics in Syria.
His bail terms, however, allowed him to be unsupervised between 8.30am and 12.30pm. The attack happened between 9am and 11am.

Merciless response is what I recall Hollande said after the Paris concert massacre.
Apparently you don’t understand the term religion
Folks seem to forget the real root of Islam (not you), which goes way back further than the 7th century.
Evidently, you’re incapable of knowing the distinction.
Tough talk followed by nothing. Time to carpet bomb these heathens in their lairs.
Just what does "merciless response" mean to a Frenchman?
I don't believe it has anything to do with kicking Islam out of the country.
Not true.....you still do not know the definition of religion
How did you make that determination?
Because you seem to think that faith and religion are some how not synonymous
Like the C-130 "death flights" during Argentina's dirty war. France has experience with this tactic against Algerian insurgents. It could happen.
A reasonable point, but faith doesn’t require religion. In fact, faith is a necessary precursor to any normal religion. For example, faith and love for one’s mother doesn’t require religion. And one can know and love Christ similarly.
She’s the daughter of a prominent nationalist.
Not true....if one is a follower of the Nazarene one has a religion and a faith
I am not going to argue this with you. Like it or not Christianity is a religion
>> one has a religion and a faith
Then I guess you’re just being redundant.
No, Nifster is not being redundant.
Faith and religion are very much related, but are not the same thing, unless one is using the slang meaning of faith.
Calling it a “war of religions” absolves politicians, liberals and atheists of any responsibility where they are and for taking action. It’s a means to scapegoat Jews and Christians -period.
The truck attack in niece and the Paris nightclub attacks are the most recent large scale attacks and the targets were NOT religious.
France is paying for turning it’s back on Christianity. Payback is a bitch
