I believe it is Trump's obligation, as the victor, to be the bigger man and do his part to heal the rift in the party, regardless of who one believes to be fault. That's just the way these things work. The victor must be a good winner.
Here's what he should work into his speech:
"You know, I've always enjoyed watching Ted Cruz take it to the powers-that-be in Washington. He's a man of deep conservative principles --- and a complete pain in the ass.
I don't enjoy it much when he's a pain in my ass.
But he's OUR pain in the ass.
And he's right about one thing in particular --- and said the most important thing you've heard at this convention --- vote for the man who will uphold the Constitution, believes in liberty and freedom, and who will return this fine country to greatness.
Well, I give my word to Ted, and I give my word to you. Indeed, I swear by G-d, on my life and the life of my children and grandchildren, that I will uphold the Constitution. I believe in liberty and freedom, and I will return this fine country to greatness."
The result would be a healing of the rift, the NeverTrumpers would shut up, and Cruz and Trump could work together, which they will need to do.
Trump will be fine without you mumbling anything.
Not a bad idea.
It’s a way for him to transform the “rift” into a graphic demonstration that he is NOT the monster the leftwing media always try to paint him as.
With respect...... What rift? The few jerks like JEB and Cruz are meaningless. We are going to win this.
I wonder if this would be a pearls-before-swine move, so to speak. That it would be met with great skepticism and cat calls: oh what do you know about the Constitution, Donald?
For all practical intents and purposes, our execution of the Constitution is at the mercy of our Supreme Court, so who Donald wants to put on it is probably the most important thing that he could actually “say” about the Constitution. And it sounds like it could be far, far worse. If people don’t listen to this, I don’t know what they might listen to.
I agree with the sentiment and the need for it. I’m just not sure exactly what Cruz wants that could result in a real collaboration.
The only things I see are the drive and determination an convictions of his early candidate declarations do not even come close do not comport with the entire conduct of his campaign and what he sees in resurrecting any sense of honor and purpose out of it today.
Exactly.
Those “few jerks” are 20% of the Republican electorate, without which it is impossible to win.
Not saying this wouldn’t be unpleasant medicine, but it would work.
The goal is to defeat Hillary. This would work.
That’s why I put self-deprecating humor into this.
I think it would go over very well.
I’d say, Donald speaks the loudest through the people he picks, whether to the ill or to the good. In business, he usually succeeds, and well.
It's not Trump's convention, it's the Republican convention. Cruz, for good or ill, EARNED his speaking slot. What he did with it is another matter ...
For some people, the goal seems to be "Trash Ted Cruz". It's stupid. Cruz has made an ass of himself, but he's not the enemy. Hildebeeste is the enemy.
As a campaign platform statement, maybe. That Donald believes in the superiority of a traditionalist reading of the Constitution and will select advisors and appointees who will support this.
It’s a fine line to walk. A statesman can’t be looking like he is pandering.
How you heal the rift is by destroying the NeverTrump crowd.
And Ted Cruz.
It is a lot easier to pardon Ted Cruz, certainly, for his gaffes. He isn’t making any requests to turn America into a socialist feelgood paradise.
No.
Hence the “pain in the ass.” No need to pretend the hard feelings aren’t there, which would be pandering.
Don’t want to rain on your parade, but
1) Mr. Trump already was gracious to the stinking
weasel globalist with no judgement called Ashley Cruz
and
2) As-hole Cruz had an Obligation to his pledge.
Cruz and his supporters will never be believed again.
Just like ObamaTRADE support of the skunk, Cruz
and his supporters are, at best, deluded.
