Like everyone else, The Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards was a Beatles fan, but he said they weren’t a particularly great live band.
“Musically, the Beatles had a lovely sound and great songs. But the live thing? They were never quite there,” he told the Radio Times
And while Richards was friends with The Beatles in their early years, he “excommunicated” them in 1967 after they became influenced by mystic leader Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, NME reported.
“He was a f—ing operator, a sucker job,” Richards said of Yogi.

Apparently John Lennon was no fan of the Maharishi after he saw what he did to Mia Farrow’s sister.
I forgot, they didn’t have to put his head in a jar, it was preserved from within!

Oh they were there alright...I bet you can actually hear this picture.
Richards would know , they had to bring in Mick Taylor, to play guitar for live shows . Taylor is quoted on the stones ‘ “I just couldn’t believe how bad they sounded,” the guitarist recalled from his first rehearsals with the Stones. “Their timing was awful. They sounded like a typical bunch of guys in a garage — playing out of tune and too loudly. I thought, ‘How is it possible that this band can make hit records?’”
Agreed. The Stones, Led Zep, and The Who were all disappointing live. All sloppy, not tight, just not good live musicians.
I saw the Kinks live in their prime. They were great.

Hard to be a good live band when you are drunk and stoned.
The Grateful Dead developed the “wall of sound” in 73 for live concerts....
Everything else pales in comparison...
Like them or not, Yes, with the complexity of their music, were great live. Petty is great live. The early Eagles were great live.
The Dead managed to get by. Of course theitr audience was complicit.
