well, the first settlers in the USA were Spaniards who set up Texan cities. Also, in 1540, Francisco Vásquez de Coronado explored from Arizona to central Kansas

The Dutch settled in New York city (New Amsterdam) well before the English. and there was New France well before the English settlers arrived in the 17th century.

The English never had to fight the Mexicans though...
