Dear FRiends,
Merry Christmas! If you have a little time over the next few days, I’d like some advice. My mother signed me up for a Christian video-streaming service (link above) through her Presbyterian church. I’m a Catholic, myself, but I have no objection to learning something interesting about the Bible or history or missions or whatever from non-Catholic sources. For example, I’ve already noticed that they have some video from Voice of the Martyrs.
If any of you would mind taking a moment to glance at the offerings on the site, I would appreciate knowing what presenters (preachers, lecturers) you think you would like, or alternatively, any you would suggest avoiding.
Thank you so much for your help!
I would suggest you avoid any advice I might have to give regarding Christian concepts. I am a curmudgeon and a bad influence.
There's a faint possibility that makes me a better poet, but what value is that in the long run?
How soon are you needing a reply?
Took a quick look and without digging deeper, I can definitely recommend anything from Ravi Zacharias. John Piper is OK, understanding that he is coming from a Calvinist Baptist point of view (which to some is a contradiction right there..)
On that quick note I’ll go back to getting music ready for tomorrow and herding Grandkids.. ;-)
Anything by Joe Boyd! He paints marvelous word pictures of Jesus and the times during which He lived.
Also, three people discuss various books of the New Testament in depth. One of the persons is a relative of a famous evangelist; the other two are from the U.K. It’s been a while so I don’t recall their names. You’re gonna have a blast with RNM!
I saw a few names I recognized & give a “second” to votes for Ravi Zacharias and John Piper. Zacharias debates formally, so there’s a strength to the structure of his teaching that sometimes is only vaguely present in the preaching of those who don’t regularly face tough theological opposition, or audiences in great need of exacting explanation.
John Piper has blessed me greatly with his work “Desiring God,” which you should read or listen to end-to-end ( http://www.desiringgod.org/books/desiring-god ). I don’t go as far as he does concerning the implications of the Sovereignty of God, but his exaltation of Christ is wholehearted and lavish.
As with everything, there is the mixed admonition to BOTH keep your Baloney Detector engaged as you receive information, AND not pounce to quickly when it goes off. There is a worthy dose of caution to accepting the word of anyone without examination, and hubris in the assumption that one’s own Baloney Detector is perfectly tuned. There is but One Standard.
