Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.
Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)
"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."
...
The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).
The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).
"There it was on the screen this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

To do so would be equivalent to taking a casual stroll into Mordor.
One does not do that.
Wow. Aren’t you the busy worker?
I found some Laura Scudder’s peanut butter, and when I looked at the ingredients, there was only one — peanuts! So I bought it and found it had separated. Oh, happy day!
Still need that breathing treatment, but I also had to take another pain pill before all was said and done.
Yesterday, for some reason, I thought about the two blown glass frogs that grandson Sam gave me for Christmas and couldn’t, for the life of me, recall where I had packed them. I went through everything again, but no luck. But I didn’t find my blue frog socks, and that was what I wrapped the frogs in.
They were in the nebulizer case! Yay! So I’m good, now. :o])
Maybe tomorrow, I’ll pack the plates and a few books. There isn’t much time before I have to pack in earnest, and I want to get as much done as possible.
I’m cleaning the innards of and underneath the furniture in the living room. Makes me think of Mordor.
Hmmm...
Maybe I should read LOTR again... I hear it calling
Have you looked inside your sofa recently? I’m pretty sure mine has Orcs.
Happy New Year!
Is it different?
We should get a new subway line which actually allows me to walk only 1/4 mile to the station and still takes me to work. That’s different.
But I think I’ll let it run for a few days before I get on it. You know, like not downloading the new Windows OS until others have found the bugs.
It seems they struck the turkeys in Turkey instead of the ones in Times Square.
I’m sure a good time was had by all.
I was nowhere near.
Should have pinged you in post 7408.
Or, as with Tom the Son (and other bears) poke with a very long stick.
He’s still away. It is rather peaceful here. I have finished cleaning for now. I will take a shower and get ready for church: black skirt and red blouse, per instructions.
Dark's does...
Does it come out at night, eat all the chips, and leave a mess?
It did when it was younger.
I would most likely find Orcs under my sofa. When it came, it had zippers under it which held the arms and the legs. I don’t know what would have happened had I left them there. Certainly, no one could have sat there. No doubt there would be some rumblings, and stability issues, as a being was trying to put them on. Hideous to contemplate.
Excellent meme, ArGee! LOL!
Yes, that would be some of Darks’ furniture. It has a habit of smothering and assimilating the poor being who happens to think it’s Just A Chair.
Borg furniture, available at The Cube.
I am a tad miffed.
I can’t move us to the new thread because my computer isn’t talking to the DNS server and gateway machine.
This bites!
Oh, drat.
Do you want me to come and slap it around a bit? I’ve been saving my angst for just such an occasion...
Probably wouldn’t faze it at all.
It seems to be having a stroke on me.
