New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Pretty country up there.

I haven’t been north of Albany since the 80’s - in NY state that is. I’ve been to Maine and New Hampshire more recently (maybe 2005 or so.)

"Meaning there is an inverse relationship between what you make and what you know."

The physicist's definition of work has nothing to do with what you know, you know.

According to physicists, you can spend the whole day at your desk, and the only work you will get done is at the gym on the treadmill.

Best hope your boss is not a physicist.

But if you sit at your desk and pick up a pencil/pen you have done work using the physicist’s definition..

Nets to zero as soon as you put it down, though.

Face it; bees do more work than the average bureaucrat.

Only if you put it down. If you drop it and then pick it up again you have a positive ‘work’ total. That and you have accomplished as much as most government work programs. So it bears repeating the action...

But yes on the bees/bureaucrat comparison.

‘Morning, epoples!

Such a cute floof this morning! That little guy can’t be very old.

What do I need for ID at the airport, now? I don’t have the license with the little gold whatever-it-is, so do I need my passport, too? It’s been a long time since I flew.

I was so cold yesterday, and so far this morning, I feel like I’ve been in the walk-in freezer. Galileo says its 68 in here. I’d turn the furnace on, but it would blow all that cigarette smoke that’s been hiding in the air ducts, into my apartment. No thanks. I’ll just add another layer of warmth.

As a footnote to the last paragraph HUD is going to ban smoking on all its properties all over the country. I am so glad to hear that!

My brain feels like molasses in January, but it does that when I’m cold.

He is about 3 weeks old. He’s a Norwegian Forest Cat who lives in Sweden, not in Norway.

The washer completed one load this morning. Maybe it will do the second as well.

I promise I will never complain about washers breaking down again. I will, however, complain about careless people who abuse the washers...

Back from Walmart, and the heater in the truck didn’t start to heat up until I dropped Zeke off at his place. I figured I’d ask him if he wanted to go, since he was at the clubhouse when I opened. He said he would be glad for the ride. He has a really awful chest cold and I felt bad for him. I don’t want any more of those things. My lungs have a hard enough time trying to function without adding a cold to the equation.

The stereo in the truck decided to work for three minutes, so I need to find someone who can troubleshoot the wiring for not a lot of money. I will do that when I get back.

I think I’m ready. About the only thing left to pack is the morphine and Benadryl and I can do that tomorrow morning.

Being anemic really sucks.
