Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.
Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)
"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."
...
The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).
The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).
"There it was on the screen this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

I’m waiting for the last batch of cookies to bake. It was a “limited edition,” evidently for Christmas, called, “Salted Caramel,” but they don’t taste very salty. I’m not impressed.
They will end up in Charlie’s cookie jar, I think. He will eat anything I make. :o])
I had too much salt yesterday: my feet are bloated. Fortunately, I plan to wear my silver sandals with my black skirt and silver blouse. I’ll drink lots of water today!
The byos and Kathleen finished Tom’s chocolate ooze dessert this morning. (He made two batches and took the more successful one to share with his friends.) They still have chocolate-dipped pretzel rods that they made yesterday with the Cub Scout friends.
Whenever I have too much salt, I eat potassium, then add water.
This has been a strange Sunday. A beer would have been good, but wine would have been better.
I’m going to write to my grandson and then hibernate. Tomorrow is laundry day, and Tuesday, I will pack my bag. I still don’t want to go. I hate taking a week out for a “vacation” when I need to try and pack at least one box or one storage tub a week. I don’t think I’m going to gain anything by the trip except an understanding of Lingolover that my son still doesn’t have.
But I’ve already got that.
And of all things, I’m thinking of the Dowager, may she rest in peace. She will have been gone two years on the 27th — the day I get back.
Yes, Covenantor, that is a hazard. Not here, though...no cows... ;o]
That could happen to Bill or Tom, but my van is the wrong shape.
It started pouring while we were at church. Seems to have stopped now, though. DP took Pat, James, and Vlad over to the nerd-gaming store to look at games for their various birthdays (Dec. 22, January 19, January 30). My weather-beeber says today’s high will be 70 and tomorrow’s will be 40.
My truck doesn’t have enough hood for a full-grown cow. Maybe a Scottish cow...
My stomach is giving me fits today, and I don’t know why. But I’m going to take some bicarb and go relapse. ;o]
Sherlock Holmes is on Masterpiece all afternoon and evening, and I wish I felt like staying up to watch it. But I’m beginning to get depressed and I need to go be by myself.
By yourself without Sherlock Holmes? Oh, dear!
I’ve been paying bills. It was not the most fun thing, but I’m done now.
As beautiful as that hood ornament is, it could have a detrimental effect on the handling.
Cows Rock, Planet Rock. (UK DAB Radio Station.)
Someone needs to milk that cow.
She’ll mosey off to the milking parlour when she’s ready. At the moment She is preparing the warm milk for the local coffee bar....
‘Night. :)
Good night! Happy Monday in advance!
The late Ash would agree. She would drink the tree-stand dry every night. Dog-retsina.
I’ll be heading out to wash clothes in a few minutes.
In other news, ZsaZsa Gabor died. She was 99. Wow.
I saw that last night.
Good morning. It’s kind of cold and drizzly here. The cats have been out and returned to complain.
I’ve got laundry on, too. The washer worked last night; maybe it will do another load.
Oh, Blackcat—my fave! Thx!
