New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Well..

The science has settled, or something like that.

Don’t underestimate the power of cow farts.

Governor Moonbeam out there on the left coast is a visionary.

(That’s how you politely say lunatic... ;-)

I hate to hear/see the word “Moonbeam” associated with ne’er-do-wells such as the Left Coast Regulator of the hemp crops. I mean, Moonbeam McSwine was an absolute doll, and some of us skinny young wimmins aspired to have even half the curves of Moonbeam and Daisy Mae. Al Capp was a much better draw-er than I was a grow-er, and I was sadly lacking in certain attributes.

However, as I look back on those Dog Patchiennes, I count my lucky stars that there isn’t quite so much to Go South. ;o]

If you live to be 70 years old you will spend TEN YEARS of your life on Monday.

I’m coming out ahead of the game, though, because I was born on a Tuesday.

You folks have forgotten about Stupifyin’ Jones. Her looks were weaponized.

How do vampires always look so neat and tidy if they can’t see themselves in the mirror?

How do you know what they can see in the mirror?

Considering that Christmas is a nominal week away, make sure you decorate your cat's tree..

You can't see these kittehs because of snow.

Morning TC.
Have been ‘summed’ to a Church in South Reading, this morning.
The automated bell ringer has failed.
This should be entertaining.

Solid brick, Flemish bond construction.

Good morning. I hope you have fun - didn’t know you were a bellringer. Many people were murdered over bellringing in Midsomer.

Today is Bill the Son’s college graduation. OldTax-lady has arrived at the airport already. DP will pick her up in an hour or so, while I organize the numerous children in various directions.

Those kittehs don’t even look real! Their little faces look squished. Not quite Persian and not quite DLH. Does it say what their breed is?

No, it doesn’t say. I found them by searching “fluffy white cat picture.”

Congratulations to Bill the Elusive. Will OldTax-Lady be staying long? Or is it just a day trip?

The wind blew sustained at around 30-40 miles an hour, most of yesterday and almost all night, finally ridding the trees of most of their leaves. I know, because they are all on my patio.

I will leave for Wally’s soon, to get enough yogurt and stuff to last until Tuesday night. I don’t want any science projects in my fridge while I’m gone.

It’s 31 degrees out. I’m not happy.

Up and back. We’ll have the graduation, go out to lunch, and then someone will take her to the airport.

Snow.

The department’s preparations were justified (this time).

It’s supposed to turn to rain. Hopefully there won’t be ice tonight.
